Why is NBC doing a Story on Mormonism Tonight?

NBC News unsuccessfully went back to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney to request an interview for this week's prime-time special on the Mormon faith after he began to seem more open to talking about it.

NBC Claimed that they asked Romney for an interview about Mormonism to discover more about the faith that has shaped him. After all these years, people still have questions about what religion Obama actually is. Some say he is a Muslim, some say he is Christian, some say he isn't very religious. Which is it? Anyone with a functional brain who doesnt flood themselves with politically biased blogs and beat the propaganda drum all day can look up what religion Obama is.

Pretty sure I've seen Obama's religion discussed by himself and by the media.. and no, it's not muslims.

I wonder why they haven't covered it in depth already since Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has been a practicing Mormon for decades.

Does religion only affect a potential POTUS and not a Senate Majority Leader?

I have never seen a documentary go into the philosophical views that has shaped Obama from NBC or any network like that. Glen Beck and Alex Jones have tried to cover it but those were always layered with conspiracies.

Where is the documentary on Communism? Or Black Liberation Theology? Or Chicago Political History?

In fact its hard to pin point anything from Obama's past, because so much of it is undocumented or sealed.

I don't support Nobama in any way, but why must he have a religion? I don't think its mandatory to have one, or did I miss something? If he wants to praise Xenu and believe that it/she/he blew up in a volcano and that's how we are here, then let him. As long as someone's religion doesn't impede on someone else's freedoms, then let them practice what makes them happy.

The difference is that Romney is out there campaigning on how his business experience and faith makes him qualified for the job. It is rare to hear Obama say anything of the sort.

I think it is interesting to learn about the religions that shape our political leaders. For a long time, every candidate was a Christian. We all know what that is. Now, that the world has grew up and started to elect and seriously look at other people with other faiths, we should be able to analyze logically what shapes the person we want to rule the country!

It's still a question, if Religion does affect politicians, but how could it not? How could their religious community not affect candidates decisions?

After all, we don't quite know who Romney's religious mentors are, (maybe that's what the documentary will reveal and I hope it does) but we do have a little idea about who Obama's are. I would just like to see the documentary about that as well to maintain balance.

I'm pretty sure South Park has already covered this. Would be hilarious if a candidate was a Scientologist.

The only point worth discussion here is NBC's intent, potential bias, and timing on this story.

Sane people know his religion. Only the insane conspiracy-minded Right wingers have any "questions" about his religion. The man has said it himself many times. You say "some people say he is a Muslim." "Some people" think clouds are made of cotton candy. There are no "some people" who do not know his religion excepting the cranks on the hard right who think he is secretly covering up being a Muslim in a big plot to bring Sharia law to American shores. You are no doubt one of them.

This is not about being "open minded" anymore than an idiot whining we have closed minds who refuse to debate the earth being flat.

It seems to me that during the last presidential election that Obama was smeared by what the Reverend Wright had been preaching.

Apparently Obama had been attending his sermons for years and years but never heard anything controversial.
