I don't believe even that would turn America to Communism. The whole western society is based on consumption , which is pretty much what keeps our societies running. Buying new stuff, TV advertising, creating new needs and wants. This system is not going anywhere, because there are too many vested interests involved. It may be the end of the traditional high street and mum and pop shops, but the big business's and brands want us to keep buying their stuff until there's nothing left, take a look at the way the Sponsors of event like the Olympic games behave. They don't want Communism, but Corporatism.

I apologize for bad form and for not reading the entire thread before replying, but it's late here and I just wanted to make a point... Socialism, facism, communism,and Maoism ( among many others ) are all different forms of government or control.

The real risk we face in America is different. Corporate Governmental structure, Ogliarchy... or totalitarianism ( police state ).

The downfall is that we've so polarized our views that we, in this country, tend to see sound social programs as gateways to communism. Then mishandling of these programs just adds fire to the flames. I do not believe American can ever be anything but what it is - a Representative Republic, The danger lay in that Republics can and do often take liberties that diminish freedoms.

I'd say there's no way in hell that will happen. The citizens of America are certainly NOT happy with how the government is working these days, but I firmly believe that they believe in the ideals of our forefathers and in a Democracy. Communism is exactly what they are fighting right now! Too much central government control and control of the government by an elitist group, as happened in the USSR.

Communism as a theory is itself a terrible idea and was certainly far worse than that in actual practice. It simply doesn't take into account human nature. Capitalism also has its weaknesses and that is it also doesn't take into account human nature which is why we need MORE rules and regulations in place AND ENFORCED! It was the lack of enforcement and lack of regulations that led to the recent looting of our treasury and taxpayers dollars by the bankers. Capitalism without a conscience is asking for trouble, and human nature all too often allows the darker side to gain power and control matters. Without strong oversight of what happens, we lose control of government to ....well.... corporations, lately.

The influx of corporate money into elections is a Very Dangerous Path. Democracy with a better voting record of people, EDUCATED people on what's going on and not just voting for parties and who their parent voted for is crucial. Be aware of the issues.

Congressmen required to run for election every two years, with elections costing so much money these days, means they are constantly trying to raise money and this keeps them from paying attention to the important issues they should be voting on rather than the political stalemate and positioning for elections as they are doing now.

Communism means strong central control, which is inefficient. It is too crude. It categorizes people and doesn't allow their efforts to be rewarded. It failed for good reason. And if we don't get our act together, since our current government is ALSO failing, we will have to re-invent ourselves the hard way rather than taking back the reins through smart voting. Our two party system means back and forth seesawing that has resulted in little forward progress. Taking turns in power or poking at who is in power. Tit for tat and mudslinging. It's become disgusting.

Nero plays the violin as Rome burns. That is what is happening now, but communism isn't the answer. Let your representative know your thoughts instead of being told what your thoughts should be by Senators and Congresspersons that get life time benefits after a mere 5 years in office. They have voted themselves into an elitist group and we allow it. When they vote on laws affecting themselves WITHOUT our knowledge or permission, they are taking the power OUT of the hands of the citizens. That is NOT democracy!

Destroy the power grid.

In another thread, people talked of how fragile our power grid actually is. Knock that out, and as another poster stated, people would be begging for FEMA camps within a month.

I think you are on to something in what order things would have to happen in. If the grid goes down, all perishable foods are pretty much history within 4-5 days and for most people, what....24 hours? maybe?

No net, no news, no MSM and no news papers. Nothing. Nada.. So for the majority of people, what was happening beyong almost literal eye sight distance is what TPTB say is happening because no other source would exist. Hell, even many HAM's would go down with their super-mars capable base stations....without long term backup power sources.

You're onto something there. Almost anything becomes much more possible in that environment.

I don't think that would have the effect people think.

I remember when the power went out on like half the US after 9/11.....I was in NYC

People were calm, directed traffic themselves.....organized search parties for missing people in the crowds that were separated from their families...I was one of them....

I saw hoodlums offer tourists cell phones to call their relatives and find a ride, They directed them to maps and helped.....

We are not the animals they try to make us out to be....If it happened, we would ban together like we have before...We are a great people and will not tear each other up.....that is a lie to make you lose faith in your fellow man and place it in their undeserving, unworthy hands..

We would not die.....we would grow stronger.

I recall the blackout you are talking about and it was great seeing the crowds going across the Brooklyn Bridge on foot and without serious problems. I think the after effects of cooperation and goodwill toward each other after 9/11 was still around...and as I recall, no one there was entirely certain it wasn't another major issue, right?

I'm not sure how much good will is out there now but a majority are running paycheck to paycheck, if they have a paycheck at all at the moment. 3-5-10+ days without power would get real interesting I'm thinking. Some locations would find community and strength and most, I think, chaos.

getting fed is not that hard if people abandon the cities.....we are the freaking bread basket of the world....

Oh and no, most thought it was a sort of terrorist cyber attack....or direct attack on our infrastructure....we just didn't care to help them...others were not sure, it didn't really matter.
