What's funny, is that those "pillars" when viewed from the correct angle, as seen above, are actually farther in the distance (besides just being a shadow BEHIND the formation/"ship") not closer to the 'photographer.' That alone should end the entire debate.

There were never any pillars in the first place.
The "ship" is a long ridge with edges confused by shadow play.
The original photo was turned and flipped in that created the illusion of a ship. The vertical issues cause downhill slopes to look uphill, and terrain going off into the distance to appear as if it's coming the other way.

Sorry to bring this old thread up but the one image from NASA the one below Arken one sounds like as if there has being some either photoshop brushing or other multimedia tools.
