I am wondering if this is part of a larger plan to take guns, or is it just a city gone too far.
This echos of DHS' "see something say something" campaign. People can do stupid things with guns. They also do stupid things with knives, cars, motorcycles, and various other means.

As a firearms owner I am appalled that soon one of my neighbors may call on me just to get paid $1000. This kind of conditioning of the population screams of a tyrannical government hell bent on controlling everything we do.

We need solutions to problems not more problems to solutions.

Wake up! speak out! And if you are put on a list .... So what.... You have a right to defend yourself. Do it!

ETA: Some think the title of this thread should be changed. So I will clarify here. This is out of Newark NJ. Not the best place to live if you own firearms. the video states if you know someone that owns an illegal gun call the tip line. you will get a PIN number. Call back a month later if your call led to an arrest you get a second PIN number. Now you can go to the bank they tell you too, give them both pins and get $1000 cash.

If you legally own a firearm and someone calls about you, you will have issues that you have to deal with even if all your guns are legal. Just one call from a neighbor could have cops busting your door down at 3 am only finding that you are indeed a lawful firearms owner. The issue here it there is no legal recourse fo filing a flase claim. now you will have damages that you have inured and no avenue for redress.

hide your guns well out of sight or friends house and during the night smuggle a small pistol into each of your neighbours house and call them and enjoy new set of firearms curtosy of your neighbours? and make sure you're completely spotless yourself as i'd imagine the neighbours may try and do the same to you

he does say "if you know someone carrying an illegal gun" call. so i would think this is aimed at mostly gangs and thugs flashing illegal guns around.

How does an anonymous person get paid $1000?

This is awesome!!
No conviction needed.
Step 1. buy cheap pistol, many out there for $100 new.
step 2. call police and get gun picked up.
Step 3. get your thousand dollars.
Step 4. Go buy a Sig Sauer and take the wife out for a 400 dollar dinner and movie!!!

No conviction, all he wants to do is get the illegal gun off the street, so I guess any gun is illegal in that city?
Funny how guns could be illegal ANYWHERE in the US...

"If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear", right? Wrong! This is a tiptoe away to marshal law. They have been taking us to tyranny for quite a while now.

Can I get $1000 for turning in my own guns? Hell, I'll buy guns for $100 and turn them in for $1000 every week! Buy them from an individual, according to state laws, and then become suspicious about the transaction, and turn it in.

Sounds like a new career! All the while keeping my legally licensed guns.

OK, more seriously......
If someone sees suspicious gun activity, they should call the authorities. My neighbors know me, and nothing would be "suspicious" to them, and they also probably know that the authorities would never find all of the guns, so that would leave me armed and angry. I don't think they would call at all, but if I see some thug walking down the street with a gat in his pants, I might call the police myself. If it turns out he is lawfully open-carrying, then fine, no harm.

Seems you and I are on the same idea, but the cops are gonna get suspicious when they get thousands of HiPoint 9mm pistols new in box with consecutive serial numbers and HiPoint opens up another factory to keep up with production.

Hmmm. I watched the clip...it's in Newark New Jersey. And he did mention if you know of someone "illegally" carrying a gun. Can't tell from that If the city has jointly decided guns are illegal to be carried by ANYONE, or if he just wants the gangbangers packing heat to get turned in.

In the area where I live, it's perfectly fine to own a gun, but you must have a license. You can carry it into places that allow it (if they don't want it, all they have to do is put a standardized decal at the entrance that says guns not allowed) The rules change from time to time, too.

There are licenses called "Concealed Carry" permits, too, in some places, but those have to be earned by passing a test and having a background check, etc. It sounded to me that it's the weapons carried by people who are not licensed to have one that the OP is addressing... but I don't live in Newark. Maybe they've passed a city ord that no one can have a gun.

At first blush I thought it was a DHS announcement aimed at everyone in the country, and was a tad concerned that they were just trying to do a "census" based on finger-pointing so they would know who will be "persons of interest" in case of martial law.

But I actually don't think that's the case. They already have a database of registered gun owners, so they know who has them from that. But it is good to ask the community to help with policing -- if someone has one who is "not supposed to" have one, like convicted felons (even after their out of custody), etc. I think they should be turned in.

I wonder, how would the average person know whether or not someone is carrying legally or illegally? Just report it anyway? I see people carrying their weapon regularly, but I am not sure how I would tell if they have it legally or not.

Of course, generalizations are dangerous, and we might make mistakes, but..... in general......

A person carrying, with a nice holster set up, and a decent looking gun, and some responsibility in their actions, and seeming familiar to the area they are in........ is probably legal.

A person with a gun pushed down in some sweatpants, or flapping loosely in a coat pocket is probably not very responsible, and likely not legal.

How would your neighbor know? It sets a very dangerous precedent. Now when the cops say they are there because they got a call.... it could be true. We have gone from a nation of laws in to a grey area where its a judgment call. History has shown that allowing those with guns to rule over those with out only leads to more suffering.

I remember a time...

When ATS members would do a little due diligence... Google something maybe... Alas... Those were the "good old days."

Gun Stoppers - GUNS WANTED.

Anyone with important information about a gun-related crime in Newark can call 1-877-NWK-GUNS ( 1-877-695-4867 ) to provide information anonymously. The Newark Police Department has a special Gun Stoppers Unit to operate the hotline and track down felons identified through it. Although callers are not asked their name, they do receive a code number to be eligible to collect a reward of up to $1000 anonymously.

1. Call 1-877-NWK-GUNS ( 1-877-695-4867 )

2. Report your information to a Gun Stoppers Unit Officer

3. Receive a 4 digit pin number.

4. Call back a month later and if your information led to an arrest, you receive another 4 digit pin number.

5. Take your two sets of pins numbers to one of our designated banks and walk out with up to $1000 cash. No questions asked.

www.npdmostwanted.com...

This seems to be a little less ominous than what the video must indicate (part of starting a thread includes giving a synopsis or commentary on external content). It's Newark, New Jersey... Not the most forward thinking city or state when it comes to the Second Amendment, and certainly rife with crime. I doubt they are interested in getting a call on every resident who may be in possession of a firearm.

Some of the tedious language involved with firearms in the state of New Jersey

Time for Chris Christie to get his prodigious @$$ in gear and get back to the Constitution and make his state safer.

yeah it depends on where you are, in some states you don't need a license to carry while in other you do and there are a few that are down right impossible to get a license in, New Jersey being one of them.

i am happily in Pennsylvania and have a LTCF but i pity my neighbors in "The Peoples Socialist Republic of NJ"

As someone who can spot those carrying guns (I'm not giving away my secrets!) I think I'll just go to Newark and start making those calls.
There are certain physical characteristics to those carrying concealed including short strides on one side only, hands involuntarily moving towards the gun as well as the usual conspicuous bulges.
Someone is going to make some good money fast.

As an American I find it appalling that a mayor of a city anywhere in the US is saying that people carrying firearms is "unacceptable" when in fact, the mayor is the one I find unacceptable.

Fuuny how they don't have any money to keep police on the beat and fireman in the fire house and money to pay to keep the stret lights on but they got a grand 4 you if youdime out your neighbor.

God what is this world coming to.

Is this what it has come to.

How we set up a fund to pay people who dime out information on the poloticians.

We pay the big lawyers to show how the politicians hide there stock profits in offshore acounts and have been buying stocks and how rich they giot from being in office.

Now how come if I have 15k deposited into my account and the bank notifies the IRS.

Well how is that applied to poloticians or senators.

Oh that doesnt apply to them.

Go set up in a gang banger area. I could be rich in a week.

Did you know there is always a issue though.

The police will never go out to investigate.

Hell they wont come unless you smoking a joint.

you would never spot me, carry my G26 inside waist band in an overland gun leather holster.

although gang bangers aren't very intelligent and few have any formal training.
