CAMPAIGN '96/U.S. HOUSE/Newsletter excerpts offer ammunition to Paul's opponent/GOP hopeful quoted on race, crime

Texas congressional candidate Ron Paul's 1992 political newsletter highlighted portrayals of blacks as inclined toward crime and lacking sense about top political issues.

Under the headline of ""Terrorist Update," for instance, Paul reported on gang crime in Los Angeles and commented, ""If you have ever been robbed by a black teen-aged male, you know how unbelievably fleet-footed they can be."

Paul, a Republican obstetrician from Surfside, said Wednesday he opposes racism and that his written commentaries about blacks came in the context of ""current events and statistical reports of the time."

Selected writings by Paul were distributed Wednesday by the campaign of his Democratic opponent, Austin lawyer Charles ""Lefty" Morris. Morris said many of Paul's views are ""out there on the fringe" and that his commentaries will be judged by voters in the November general elections.

Paul said allegations about his writings amounted to name-calling by the Democrats and that his opponents should focus instead on how to shrink government spending and reform welfare.

www.chron.com...

This article is from a news archive dating back to 1996....showing that not only did Ron Paul actually KNOW what was in the newsletters...but that he was "taken out of context."

If this is true, it proves that he is lying to all of his supporters and essentially everyone else.

RON PAUL KNEW ABOUT THE RACIST NEWSLETTERS WRITTEN IN HIS NAME. In a 1996 interview with the Dallas Morning News, which you can purchase at this link, Ron Paul shows clear knowledge of these newsletters and justifies what’s in them. Now if he didn’t know they existed, and if he had nothing to do with them, then how come he’s justifying them? Here’s his own words. (His standard answer about the newsletters now, is to deny that he knew about them. Here is his standard answer now in this link. He’ll also say they are old news. We deny this claim. This is not wiped away by saying, “It’s old news.”)

Dr. Paul, who is running in Texas’ 14th Congressional District, defended his writings in an interview Tuesday. He said they were being taken out of context. Dr. Paul also said he did not know how his newsletter came to be ! included in a directory by the Heritage Front, a neo-Nazi group based in Canada.

The newsletter was listed on the Internet under the directory’s heading “Racialists and Freedom Fighters.” In the interview, he did not deny he made the statement about the swiftness of black men. “If you try to catch someone that has stolen a purse from you, there is no chance to catch them,” Dr. Paul said.

He also said the comment about black men in the nation’s capital was made while writing about a 1992 study produced by the National Center on Incarceration and Alternatives, a criminal justice think tank based in Virginia.

Citing statistics from the study, Dr. Paul then concluded in his column: `Given the inefficiencies of what DC laughingly calls the criminal justice system, I think we can safely assume that 95 percent of the black males in that city are semi-criminal or entirely criminal.” “These aren’t my figures,” Dr. Paul said Tuesday. “That is the assumption you can gather from the report” (I posted the entire article at the bottom of this entry.) There is no longer any denying that Ron Paul knew about these newsletters. He justified the content of those newsletters.

So what? I read the article in a post on another thread.....and I decided to make a thread for it.

Does this prove that he's currently lying to his supporters? If this is true...then it does.

What you people fail to understand, is how blatantly obvious it is you are just grasping at every tiny little straw you can find, when you time and time again try to throw mud at the good doctor. I would say, save your efforts, cause Ron Paul supporters do not care about those small matters, you clearly do not understand how much research it takes for one to become a Ron Paul supporter, and how steadfast those beliefs become when you understand the bigger picture.

These small matters you guys use as ammo is like... trying to shoot an elephant with a peashooter.

So you are just going to write this off? If this is true, it does mean he's been lying to his supporters...as he has said he had no knowledge of them numerous times as he has stated he didn't know who wrote them...but this article shows that he ADMITTED to writing them and that he was taken out of context due to the politics at the time.

If thats all Ron Paul's opponents have that's sad. His actions when confronted over and over about this and his actions with minority community leaders speaks for itself. IMO... See other threads.

Are you [SNIP] kidding me? Are there not enough threads about this old ass [SNIP]

Half of his supporters are black.
No - he's not finished.

This has been brought up every year...in fact I just watched an in depth interview with wolf blitzer interviewing RP in 2008 asking about the letters - in which he gave the same answers.

No - he did not write them
No - he did not read them at the time they were written
No - he does not agree with them and he disavowed everything racist in them

Just like all the other times they've tried to bring this up

How many different way's can the man say he's not a racist - his track record definitely doesn't support him being a racist...in fact he's voted in favor of minoritys even when it was against his part line.

Give it up - this is sooo weak...it's all you got.

No, no, this particular in this thread is actually is quite old. I know about this for quite some time (among other things). It just seems to me that a lot of RP supporters don't.

I'm glad that ATS still has some of its old habit left, scrutinizing presidential candidate. It's a good habit.

Lol i was following the other thread also

Well my response to the op is that it doesnt constitute proof of racism, but more so that Ron Paul was insensitive to statistics regarding race. It would actually give more credit to his explicit style of honesty. This is all essentially nothing more than grasping for straws.

Hate to break it to you but he already admitted to replying to these in the past and disavowed them. This report only proves he was telling the truth.

Thanks for the support!

Where does it say he admits to writing them? It keeps saying "Paul said" but then follows it up with "in the letters" which takes us back to square one.

Read it again.

It's just the letters - nothing more. Old news.

This article states otherwise, it's from 1996....and to me looks legitimate. Now if someone can prove they are not, that's certainly fine with me....but no one has stated any evidence yet to indicate otherwise.

And does that somehow make this thread invalid? Or what?

If anything your thread just exposes how delusional Ron Droids really are. Ron Paul saving the world?

Good one

First off, if this is true then it shows that Ron Paul did lie, at least about knowing these letters existed. It appears in 1996 he admitted to having known they existed but in 2011 denies that he knew about them until 10 years after they were written, which would be a lie. Second, this should raise at least some concern among RP followers about his character should this be true, since he lied straight face on TV.

Third, supposing all of this is true the newsletter should not be something to crucify the guy with I mean damn, it was the early ‘90s and he was an older white man in Texas, who the hell did not think like that? He was merely saying, or allowing to be said in his newsletter, what almost everyone else was thinking. You can plug up your ears and say ‘la la la’ all day long; it does not change that fact. Besides, he was not saying “hang the negro!” he was just saying, or allowing to be said, things like a 13 year old black kid mugging you can be scarier than another race. Wow big deal; get over your puritanical mindset.

FYI, I am not voting for Ron Paul nor am I a ‘Paulite’, just someone trying to bring this discussion down to a rational level.

No - it keeps saying "Ron Paul wrote" and "In his letters Ron Paul said"

It's just talking about the letters.

The writer of the article has ASSUMED that Ron Paul wrote the letters and refers to them as such.

It's the same old tired BS.
