Obama Launches “$40″ Payroll Tax Cut Campaign by Keith Koffler on December 22, 2011, 8:46 am President Obama is stepping up his PR war against House Republicans with a just-scheduled 12:15 pm ET appearance at the White House to tout a new campaign highlighting the tax break families will lose if the partial payroll tax holiday is not extended. From the White House: In the afternoon, the President will continue to urge House Republicans to do what’s right for the American people by allowing a vote on the short term bipartisan compromise passed by almost the entire Senate. If Congress fails to extend the payroll tax cut, the typical family making $50,000 a year will have about $40 less to spend or save with each paycheck. Obama will point people to a new section of the White House website where they can “share what a $40 paycheck means to them.” In addition, he’ll urge them to make use of a new Twitter hashtag, #40dollars. The White House has also rounded up a group of citizens “who would see their taxes go up” to appear alongside Obama. Unclear if they’ll recite their assuredly heart-rending tales of prospective woe. Obama has been demanding that House Republicans move a two-month payroll tax cut extension approved by the Senate. Obama today will leave unsaid, of course, that everyone’s taxes will also go up if the Senate fails to return and act on the House-passed year-long payroll tax cut extension.

$40. woo hoo. srsly? 40. dollars. they're twittering it like it's cool. This clown is so stupid it's mind numbing.

$40 means a lot to many American families struggling to pay the bills and feed their children.

But go ahead and mock them...I guess that is much better than trying to help them out.

I keep seeing that economic data move in the right direction, like it did again today.

What says you about that?

Will you send me 40 dollars a week then? I don't really need it but I'll never turn down a little bit of cash. That's a nice saturday night movie with my girlfriend or a couple beers with my friends on a friday night.

I'd rather have it than it get fed into the machine.

Considering none of the federal taxes are funding the programs they were intended to fund, it seems ludicrous to take more.

Taxes go the interest on the loans that the US took from the fed. All currency is printed from these loans.

People know the truth but they still don't act.

So sad. Christmas is a distraction for corrupt legislators to pass corrupt laws since the early 1900s.

Merry Less for everyone.

Obama fails? He's the first black president of a country that is deeply rooted in slavery, discrimination, and the outright, deliberate oppression of blacks. This in itself will ensure that, regardless of whatever questionable decisions Obama has made or will ever make, and regardless of whether he wins a second term, history will remember Barack Obama as an unequivocal success.

This is silly. He is famous for his skin tone? C'mon. MLK is rolling over in his grave at this. Obama is a fantastic celebrity performing a well written script, acted out on the world stage for all to see.

The merit of his actions are important, not the color of his skin.

If he does anything good, he will be remembered for it. So far he has continued to push forward corporate interest while ignoring the citizens of the country.

This country is no better off than it was 8 years ago.

To become a president you do not need to be successful. Period. You must just suckle at the TEAT of the powers that be. Obama is not successful, he is a criminal.

He, the senate, and the House Democrats are simply wanting the payroll tax cut to remain the way it is NOW.
To extend it so it continues. If it doesn't taxes would TAKE an average of $40 a week from paychecks.

So you'd prefer to pay $40 a week more in taxes than you do now?

I think you'll find yourself in a TINY minority.

BTW: Are you going to give a link for your quote?

If it were up to the republicans, they would have given that $40 a week to millionaires and billionaires at the expense of the hard-working struggling families in this country.

So I couldnt call Obama a "failure". The "failure" would be on the part of Americans who vote in a republican (other than Ron Paul) into office which would be a sure defeat to Americas middle-class and a win for the wealthy who do not need MORE MONEY at our expense.

It may not sound like much to some, but $160.00 a month is a couple/few bills for the average folk. I could sure use it.

Whether you realize it or not, $40.00 is a lot of money to a lot of people.

What I find odd is the fact that, all of a sudden, republicans are demanding that tax cuts be paid for prior to being enacted. Where was this requirement when Bush pushed through tax cuts while simultaneously lying us into a decade long war with Iraq? Where was this requirement when Bush pushed through his unfunded Medicare Part D prescription coverage?

IMO, if Obama has done anything at all, he has "Succeeded," in exposing the fact that republicans are only for tax cuts when they favor the rich. I guess it's all in the eyes of the beholder.

The same people who scoff at the poor who desperately need that 40 bucks a paycheck are the same people who cry foul when we talk about hiking up the taxes on the violently wealthy 1%.

Pure hypocrisy. No... it's worse; it's greedy, evil, and selfish. That's the worse kind of hypocrisy.

He'll be remembered as just another @ssclown liberal socialist puppet who thought he could ride the gravy train on future taxpayers backs to buy votes and grab another term he doesn't deserve because he kept virtually none of his first term campaign promises and bald face lied about his intentions.

It doesn't matter what color IT is FFS's, it matters how stupid, deceitful and conniving IT is.

Does that about sum it up for the Manchurian Candidate?

Cheers - Dave

What amount is the paycheck they are talking about 40 dollars a week. Most people I know that amounts to a large part of their pay check. Apparently the people who are crying about the 40 dollars are the people who are actually depending on it. It all hype with no substance. If they actually cared they would be putting the taxes where the real money is. GE, Warren Buffet, and the others that are totally tax free.

Maybe I'll use the submission form at the White House site to tell Obama I would use the $80 per month to donate to Ron Paul's campaign.

All of you people need to do some basic math. The tax increase for someone making $50,000 would be about $1,000 a year. There are 52 weeks in a year, basic math says that is about $20.00 per week. Quit buying into the BS that comes out of the White House. Also the tax increase wouldn't affect 160 million people. We don't have that many working in the US at this moment.
