Report: Russia delivers supersonic cruise missiles to Syria

Russia has delivered supersonic cruise missiles to Syria, AFP reported on Thursday.

A military source told the Interfax news agency, “The Yakhont supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles have been delivered to Syria," although it was not made clear exactly when the shipment was made.

It looks like Russia is serious about protecting it's regional interests within Syria. These supersonic missiles are a great addition to the S-300 missile defense system Russia has provided.

If these missiles are as good as they're claimed to be then perhaps any country who was thinking on striking Syria may need to rethink their strategy. The ground war fought by the Free Syria Army and the foreign fighters may be the West's best bet to toppling the Assad regime unless they are willing to risk losing expensive hardware such as fighter jets. It seems Syria is ready to put up a fight against the NATO war machine thanks to Russia.

This is not the first time we have been sparring with Arms and Russia in the middle east. Conflict between Russian and American interest in the Middle East is nothing new... history repeating itself... Again..

The P-800 Oniks (Russian: П-800 Оникс, alternatively termed Yakhont (Яхонт) for export markets; "Oniks" is onyx, and "Yakhont" is ruby or sapphire in English) is a Russian (former Soviet) supersonic anti-ship cruise missile developed by NPO Mashinostroyeniya as a ramjet version of P-80 Zubr. Its GRAU designation is 3M55. Development reportedly started in 1983, and by 2001 allowed the launch of the missile from land, sea, air and submarine. The missile has the NATO reporting codename SS-N-26. It is reportedly a replacement for the P-270 Moskit, but possibly also for the P-700 Granit. The P-800 was reportedly used as the basis for the joint Russian-Indian supersonic missile the PJ-10 BrahMos.

Sergei Prikhodko, senior adviser to the Russia President, has said that Russia intends to deliver P-800 to Syria.[1] However Syria lacks any aircraft that can launch this missile and any ability to track targets over the horizon for it, so will be limited to line of sight attacks from ships and ground platforms.[2] Israel is more concerned that these missiles may be transferred to Hezbollah for a repeat of the INS Hanit incident.[3]

Surely cluster bombs would be better than cruise missiles for use against crowds of unarmed civilians.

Why does it matter if Syria has these weapons?

Oh yeah, because we are about to invade and bomb them to rubble? That would be the only reason it would matter if they had access to this type of anti-ship weaponry.

We should leave them alone, I think we have bombed enough nations this year already. Can't this wait a few months at least?

In my opinion since Russia is willing to provide all this weaponry to Syria it means they really mean business about not wanting NATO not to intervene. Other world powers are saying enough is enough. All these pointless wars are getting out of control.

Ok. I'm sure most of you are much more informed on this than I, but just to be clear...

Russia is arming Syria, while Russia is cozying up to Iran, while Iran is threatening attacks on Syria?

We have in no way delivered enough pain and suffering to the muslims in the Middle East.

I for one am enjoying immensely the descent into islamic insanity being paraded before the non-muslim world. They deserve every act against them for their centuries of deception and Jihad. And especially to atone for the Islamic Jihad on the children of Beslan.

There are a lot of Christians in Syria too, even a few Jews. In your opinion does the religion one practices determine their worth as a human? Bombs don't discriminate buddy.

You do realize that expensive "hardware" is expensive for a reason and is meant to be used. I like how people ignore the technological ability of Ameria who spends 45% of all nations combined military budgets.
