The site isn't letting me upload media for some reason. I wanted to share a song from my favorite band ever...Clutch.

They rock! I think you guys might like them. This is a song from their first album way way back. Their sound has evolved to not quite this hard, but they are great musicians and put on one heck of a show.

The song is called Binge and Purge from the album Transnational Speedway League.

The thing that really turns me off a lot of black metal isn't the music itself but the people behind it.

Rampant neo-nazism, hyprocrisy and homophobia are just a few from the top of my head.

That's generally only NSBM. While some of these things were present in the Inner Circle, it was still only a few members like Faust ( who has pretty much left metal altogether, with the exception of writing a few songs here and there) and Varg (who any metal fan will tell you is completely crazy.)

I am deeply offended that you do not appreciate my favorite music. I consider that music genuine to its genre because it evokes certain emotions. There is also music I do not care for because it does not instill in me the feelings I prefer.

However, a genre needs to evolve or else it will stagnate the same way death metal has. All of the founders seem to have realized this. Bathory quickly moved away from the straight up BM sound to incorporate more classical influence and this lead to Quorthon's best work. Darkthrone have pursued their black 'n roll sound. Emperor's last two albums were more symphonic metal than black metal and now Ihsahn has his progressive act. Varg did the whole ambient thing and that is still reflected in his work now that he's out of prison. Mayhem have are more post-black now than straight up black metal. Enslaved have been drawing on more and more of a progressive sound for years now. And then there's Sigh...

That's not really true, the extreme right is quite prevalent in many aspects of black metal (and it's related underground genres) in general. It's rare to find a hardcore BM fan who listens to anything made by non-white men. Indeed, how many black metallers are not Caucasian? Sure, there are pockets in nearly every country where it has expanded and developed over the years but at it's core and homelands it is rife.

I think it would be disingenuous for someone to claim there isn't much Nazism in the BM scene, with it only being fringe or marginalised. How many times do BM artists have to refer to their (Aryan) ancestors, German military, and even notions like Blood and Soil? It's everywhere. Take the band Marduk, for example. I remember when their album "Panzer Division Marduk" came out to much approval on the BM scene, this would not be regarded as NSBM (National Socialist Black Metal - for those wondering) in and of itself, and even the band members would suggest they merely used the theme of World War II for an album when faced with an unsympathetic interviewer. However, on further questioning one of them said, "Marduk want to prevent immigration to Sweden and that I was proud over the fact that my grandfather was a serving German officer during the second World War".

Plausible deniability.

One could argue at least figureheads like Varg wear their colours on their sleeve, and have berated newer school bands for cowardice on this subject. I do not agree that the majority of BM fans hold extreme right views. I might even suggest that a fair number of them do not realise the full ideology behind much of the music and just appreciate the overall sound (much like I did when first introduced to it), but I feel people should be made aware.

Maybe it really has changed since my departure of ways with old friends who went on to become quite successful in the scene, but I remain very sceptical until evidence indicates otherwise. Please don't consider this post an attack on you or your musical tastes, but rather my personal experience and opinion. You seem intelligent, well-versed and polite - maybe BM is quite different in the USA?

For one you can make the claim that there aren't many non-white people in metal in general, not just BM. However, there is a prominent BM scene in both Japan and South America. When it comes to comments about race and the like, it is generally not meant in a Nazistic way, but more in a national pride type way. Most of these bands don't advocate the killing of others, but at the same time they are seeking to preserve their heritage, which they believe has already been raped by Christianity. Then there's also the fact that a lot of these bands are merely putting on a front. Just look at Gaahl of Gorgoroth. Magazines everywhere were labeling him the most extreme man in metal, but he is now an openly gay man with his own fashion line.

As for BM in America, I'd say it's throwing off the yoke of the classic Norwegian sound a defining its own sound. It seems like a lot of bands are moving towards either the depressive sound of Xasthur and Leviathan, the atmospheric sound of Wolves in the Throne Room, or folk sound of Agalloch.

To a certain extent I was yes. The death of Bonzo was one thing, Robert plants son also died and a few other things, all which prevented them from going on a HUGE comeback tour. If they had have done that tour they would have been massive again and continued their work for much longer. These things all happened JUST prior to the tour...I think there is a link. Have a look into the house Jimmy owned, theres more to Jimmy's work than people know. en.wikipedia.org...
