a martian artifact or one of ours that went missing?

the artefact has a conical shape as reflected in the shadow that it cast.
the object itself is about 5 meters in diameter and if it is conical in shape it is just about 3meters in height to its centerpoint.

I believe that a number of probes and crafts , russian and americans and others who know who else, went missing since the start of our mars explorations.
Could this be one one of them or just a rocky protrusion?

Looks like they tried to open a Best Western
there but maybe it went belly up
due to the bad economy and had to shove off?

Location location location!

No seriously... great find! (S&F) Never saw this before.

Can you give us the Location of this so we can go and confirm it for ourselves.

I'd like to take a look at the object in different Databases. And see for myself!

On a different note the object looks extremely intriguing its probably something artificial i'd guess. Just look at the shadow!

I don't think it is a beagle, more like a bagel.

Sorry, I'll leave this to the more serious minded while I go feed the animals.

Come back later to find out what it is. You gotta love ATS.

It looks like a low resolution blur. Do you really think you will make a discovery from Google anything?

Very interesting. They think it crashed on the other side of Mars? This all I can find but I don't know this location so hard to say much except this type of smooth and bulbous looking rock is not unusual though the scale of OP's pic must be enormous.

ah okey here's some additional shots so you can have an idea of the general area...and another view from a different angle.

thanks for the link. but gusev crater is 2000 kilometers WNW from this object so this couldnt be the "long sought rock outcrop".

sorry you're not seeing it.i put in some general area shots 2 threads up, maybe could be of help.
Conclusion? should there be any?
these images are up for grabs. if you come to a conclusion to what it is, am all ears...

insufficient data to make any conclusion

if you want to " analyse " shadows to discern the size of an object you need to know 2 critical parameters

1 - sun angle - a 60 degree sun angle will produce a shadow half the length of a 30 degree sun anfle on identical terrain - basic trigonometry

2 topography of the ground on which the shadow lies - a 10 degree down slope will produce a longer shadow than a 10 degree upslope .

so unless you know both of these variables - the shadow length provides no insite into the object size

really dont feel the need to go back to the rigours of "basic trig".
this google apps - linear measurement - is quite accurate.it includes the sags and drops in measurements.
anyhow, heres another screen shot and i will put in some data for you to work it out and reconcile with google data.

(orientation - Due North).
the object itself is perched on a slope of the southern outer rim of a crater.
i extended the trajectory of the shadow and it would seem that the sun's is somewhere on the 10 O'clock
position and with a 35 degree of inclination, roughly.
now maybe you would like to do your basic trigo with these additional data.
