HOUSTON -(Dow Jones)- General Electric Co. (GE) Chief Executive Jeff Immelt said Wednesday the U.S. should "remain committed" to nuclear energy despite the crisis unfolding in Japan.

In a speech given at the Baker Institute here, Immelt said Americans "should learn" from Japan's nuclear crisis, but continue to develop the technology. "I don't know if it's going to be in this decade or next, but we need a nuclear industry," Immelt said.

So right in the midst of the greatest nuclear disaster in history. General Electric the designer of the nuclear reactor in Japan that has melted down. General Electric is letting us know that we do not have a choice nuclear reactors and nuclear accidents, nuclear waste, and nuclear disasters are going to be part of our future.

The article also mentions that GE paid zero taxes in the US last year! Sounds like a good US corporate citizen! Pay nothing in taxes and create and sell the most dangerous products and since no insurance company will insure these new plants the american taxpayer is financially responsible if there is an accident or disaster. That's right GE has zero liability in fact I am sure they will manage to get government subsidies!

The only thing they have to say about their failed reactor is "You are going to be buying more of them so just relax this won't hurt a bit."

Give Mr. Immelt a paper suit and put him on cleanup duty in Fukushima!

GE makes errible prodcuts..research thier furnace boilers and shower filters..thier overpriced, made in china,a nd over84% of the boilers, FAIL as warranty is up. i dont trust GE to make a lightbulb anymore...
so we must remain commited? thier is selfishness in those words. thier saying We are NOT going to change a thing, go greener to save people and environment..were interested in developing the technology, in this case, nuclear energy, since our foot is int he door and have a piece and ownership of it* thats what their saying*
GE wnats nuclear commitment, soley to remian powerful for governemnt contrafts, and money and leadership on wallstreet markets...of course they want you commited*
they should be commited, for lying, and keeping us in the dark* thats what i think

Jeffrey Immelt, the head of GE, is facing backlash from left-leaning groups who say that he shouldn’t be on the White House Jobs Council or any other panel in light of reports that the company last year made $14.2 billion in profit, paid zero in corporate federal taxes and actually received a $3.2 billion tax benefit.

Thirty-five years ago, Dale G. Bridenbaugh and two of his colleagues at General Electric resigned from their jobs after becoming increasingly convinced that the nuclear reactor design they were reviewing -- the Mark 1 -- was so flawed it could lead to a devastating accident.

In 2010 GE makes a 14 billion dollar profit and receives a 3.2 billion dollar tax break while Japan and the rest of the world receives the bill for the Fukushima nuclear accident.
