News from the Guardian:

Employers in the US shed twice as many jobs as expected in July, fanning fears that the recovery in the world's largest economy will not see a revival in employment.

The US government said 131,000 jobs were lost overall, compared with forecasts for a 65,000 fall. The drop was mainly due to work finishing for temporary staff hired by the government to conduct its census.

But private hiring was also weaker than expected.

Economists polled by Reuters ahead of the monthly non-farm payrolls data, forecast that private-sector jobs would rise by 90,000, but in the event only 71,000 were added. At the same time, June's overall drop was revised to a far steeper 221,000 from 125,000.

I would be so grateful if people could help me answer two questions about this:

1) Why?
2) What are the long-term implications?

1) Outsourcing, old jobs will never return, create new ones.
2) Evolve or die. Make a choice.

Looks like finding a job for an American is going to mean leaving the country soon.

WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON??!!!

Theres going to be serious unrest soon in America, especially if Republicans gain control of the house in November!!! That means all those folks that are unemployed will NOT be getting the unemployment extensions, and CRIME WILL SKY ROCKET.

NOT GOOD!

Time to build an underground bunker I guess.

Let's hope the billionaires pledge to share wealth will help to create jobs in US instead of other parts of the world where cheap labour and oppression is paramount.....

Whatever the unemployment numbers, those numbers are much higher for those who voted for Obama.

Yes, numbers of unemployed vary between liberals and conservatives, with liberals carrying the higher numbers. Until such time as the unemployment numbers among liberals can reach thirty percent or more....if they haven't already.

It's like wish fulfillment come November. You vote for liberals, you are sure to remain unemployed.

Matters look so much more cheery for conservative voters.

Oh, yeah....if you go looking for a job, be sure to wear a pin that says, "I Voted Conservative."

Why hire a liberal for four dollars an hour.......

When you can hire an illegal for two dollars and hour....and the illegal will work harder and be more dependable than the liberal.

Do you really want to hire this guy and pay for his ObamaCare?

I'm sorry but that statement makes no sense whatsoever. If you researched you would find the reason why the republicans opposed that bill in the first place and it had nothing to do with unemployment compensation but was opposed because the democrats saw an opportunity to put a boat load of pork in it instead of a straight bill that helped the unemployed.

Don't worry, they're going to pass another stimulus package!

And when unemployment numbers are half of the population, they'll enforce the mandatory voluntary National Service and everyone will be working again!

Baloney, your above comment is just that.

Dem's wanted the Repub's to pass the first extension with funding coming from the Porkulus Bill. They agreed to do so. This go around, the Dem's wanted the cost of the extension to added directly to the debt instead of funding it from the Pork Bill as they did previously. This is what the Repub. objections were about.

$421 BILLION DOLLARS OF THE ORIGINAL STIMULUS BILL HAS NOT BEEN SPENT.

The jobs that have been lost will not be coming back as they have been moved overseas, never to return. Even BO's new Chevy Assembly plant will be built in MEXICO!!! What kind of bull is that!!!!

Both parties are responsible for screwing the American workers.

Anyone that votes for an incumbent in November, needs to have his head examined.

The government can't continue to hand out extensions to the unemployed and put it against our national debt, either. Sooner or later, the people holding our notes are going to stop lending money and then we won't be able to spend anything!

I would just like to know why it is that Republicans (and their supporters) display ZERO concern for spending on war, but worry about slight expenses in the unemployment extension bill.

Why is there always UNLIMITED funds and lack of concern on spending towards this USELESS war, but TEMPERS FLARE INTENSELY when money is to be spent on areas that benefit the middle-class working Americans who worked their WHOLE lives and NOW need what their TAXES went towards their ENTIRE life.

I just DONT understand it? Can anyone clarify this?

What is it with all of the Republican this and Democrat that??? WTF is the matter with you people?

BOTH parties have collectively built one heck of a s**t sandwich for the rest of us to eat! Republicans ramped up deficits to fund unneccesary wars. Democrats have further ramped up deficits to create a fascist regime. NEITHER party has addressed a singel REAL problem that this country faces like border security, job outsourcing, financial fraud by the banks and investment houses. Other than some token BS legislation passed in order to attempt to pacify the masses, almost everything done has benefitted big business.

I think it is time for ALL of you partisan hacks to wake up and smell the coffee. BOTH of your parties SUCK and deserve to be kicked to the curb come November!!!

What really amazes me is we could start massive energy projects like
large scale wind farms, large scale solar farms, and algae bio fuel
out in the desert.

Instead we gave trillions to banksters, some that are not even in the US.

One of the biggest parts of our trade deficit is all the oil we buy
from overseas.

If we did the algae oil like Valcent Technologies and others has shown
years ago to work we'd keep that money here in the US, and stop
funding nations that hate us.

The 2 biggest expenses for the US are the military and SSI.

We have 700+ bases in 130+ countries, it is time to at least
to reduce that and focus it on long term industry for the US
and reverse the flow of jobs to overseas nations.

No more corporate welfare to companies that send jobs
overseas to countries that do not have a FDA, EPA, OSHA,
and break the laws of the US.

True fair trade would be equal in all ways.

If they have child labor or ppl working for pennies an hour
it is not truly fair trade it is slave trade.

The positive note is that conservatives are being hired for the existing jobs.

Employers just aren't hiring liberals.

It's mostly the liberals who are suffering the greatest unemployment digits.

It's sort of Darwinian, the survival of the fittest in the American job market. Education and intelligence does count. The Nanny State is running out of fuel. Lessons are being learned.

Today's unemployed liberal has a better chance of becoming tomorrow's employed conservative.

I just started a thread about GM's plan to invest $500 million in a Mexican auto plant. GM, who we bailed out with taxpayer dollars because Obama whined that if GM went bankrupt, the world would end.

This is how we are repaid? By sending money and jobs to Mexico? And you complain about Republicans?

You are sorely mistaken, sir.

Just one more example of why you don't trust government predictions. Ever. Ever. Ever.

The government knew full-well that all those census workers would be unemployed come July - the government is the entity that hired and fired them! Expecting us to believe that the government didn't see this mass exodus to the ranks of the unemployed by its own employees on a time-line it created, or that it was somehow unaware of the fiscal situation of municipalities at every level and the ensuing lay-offs (65,00 of them)... that's just insulting.

1. Because the economists, along with the bankers and government, are criminal looters and liars.

There is only one correct school of economics, the Austrian School.

2. The implications are a total implosion of western civilization. The criminal government has destroyed us. Investors are foolishly flocking to bonds, but when they realize the government is insolvent and the debts will be paid back through inflation, they will dump the dollar all together.

The US will devolve into Zimbabwe, for the exact same reasons as Zimbabwe. The Soviet empire collapsed and broke apart because socialist policies ultimately lead to economic destruction. This will happen in America. It is economic law.

Here's a full lecture explaining everything:

Rubbish.

They opposed it because it was unfunded.

Their tax cuts, their war, their debt was all unfunded - oh - but try and help the poor people and look out the sky is falling.
