This is Absolutely HUGE News!!

Israeli researchers have developed a computer algorithm capable of identifying sarcasm in written text.

Article Source

Devised by computer scientists at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem, the algorithm could pave the way for more sophisticated communication between humans and computers - the Holy Grail of artificial intelligence.

The new formula has been programmed to recognize sarcasm in lengthy texts by analyzing patterns of phrases and punctuation often used to indicate irony.

In tests on 66,000 product reviews posted on the Amazon shopping website, the algorithm had an impressive 77 per cent success rate in picking out sarcastic comments - arguably higher than some humans.

The first headline in this thread WAS NOT SARCASM, really, I truly think this is HUGE News! You have got to love those Israelis huh? They are in the midst of constant turmoil yet they still find the time to develop an algorithm that picks out sarcasm from text. This is the best thing since the invention of ICQ IMO!!

We do really need this. Especially on ATS!!
Imagine how many misunderstandings develop from lack of ability to identify sarcasm even for humans reading the text.

Man, the only people that are gonna benefit from this technology are people with Asperger's.

They used 66 thousand product reviews from Amazon's website?

Did they contact each reviewer to find out if it was sarcasm or not?

If someone says "BEST ITEM EVER!" How would a human tell if that was sarcasm or not without asking the writer?

Can we get a software that teaches English proficiently, so people can catch the sarcasm?

Funny thing, there are some posters that I can't tell if they're being sarcastic or not
but seriously
or am I being serious
this is why we need this software.

I have no idea at all what being sarcastic means. I have no intention whatsoever of trying to confuse that software.

So that's why the Gulf oil-spill has received non-stop coverage...

They're trying to distract from this monumental discovery.

Good catch, man.

...Well I wasn't going to point that out because I didn't want to fear-monger but since you mentioned it.

Well it's harder on ATS than most other places.

Two people can make the exact same post like "OMG there are aliens everywhere" and one of them is serious and the other is sarcastic. It's hard to tell which is which sometimes, especially if it's a new poster without any posting history to put their world view in context.

I doubt this will work, even some people on ATS can't spot a post that is dripping in sarcasm, happens all the time. It usually involves a member writing a serious post in a sarcastic way, in which another poster retaliates after being enraged by what he/she has just read and starts calling the poster a bigot, racist, war monger, loony liberal, redneck, communist, socialist etc etc 9/10 that's how it goes down in my experience. I don't think this algorithm will work if even humans can't seem to get it right.

This is awesome. Finally people will be able to communicate clearly on the Internet, without misunderstanding.

Does it spell-check?

Well they invented it so one would hope the could detect it!

My friends, family and workmates could benifit from this technology since they are just so smart and observant.
