Russia seeks new missiles due to U.S. shield plans

news.yahoo.com

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia's military said on Friday it had intensified efforts to develop new ballistic missiles in response to U.S. plans to deploy an anti-missile system in Europe and Russia's navy test fired a new generation rocket.

The decision by the United States to deploy interceptor missiles in Poland and a radar system in the Czech Republic has angered Moscow, which says Russia's national security will be compromised by the U.S. anti-missile system.

Rejoice. The Russians took the bait and began to seek more sophisticated missiles to breach the radar system installed in Europe. The response from the American private interest will be the installation of very sophisticated and very expensive missile system to meet the "Russian threat." Once again, the Americans will rise and defend freedom-loving people against the evil empire to the east.

When communism folded in the former Soviet Union, the folks in Eastern Europe got a new lease on life, but for the military-industrial complex in the USA, the demise and break up of the powerful communist state was a tragedy. It's not a secret that the US government loves to defend its freedom by using very sophisticated and therefore expensive weapons systems.

I thought that the Russians were smarter than that. But no one likes to be f-cked with that way, so the emotions and little push from the Russian military prevailed.

And so the tensions between Russia and the USA are about to grow and reach the desirable level so Dick Cheney could go off his sleeping pills. Actually. he can sell the rest of his supply to the Czechs -- they might need it with all the nuclear armament on their territory installed to protect their freedom.

This is shaping up to be another idiotic contest to see who can outspend one another in military technology. All this will lead to is a new arms race which will benefit no one but the owners of the defense corporations.

But I don't really see it as Russia "taking the bait". Russia already had plans underway to develop a new ICBM to replace its aging missiles most of which are over 20-30 years old. The missile shield added a spark, but no one is surprised by it - Russia warned that this would happen if US went through with the plans. So this is nothing new.

Oh and if the Pentagon's sole intent was to "bait" Russia, I seriously feel sorry for U.S. taxpayers.

I think the US is so far ahead of the others technologically that they will roll out something else soon to cause Russia and China to spend money they don't have trying to catch up. We spent the money already and can afford to wait out the economic downturn. If we can't beat them them bankrupt them.

Stan, you have got it all wrong, the Russians never gave up anything but America and the West did. whilst we have been disarming they have been building up their military whilst ours is gettting weaker.

What has actually happened is the West has suddenly realised what has been going on hence the sudden deployment of a missile shield in Eastern Europe. the Russians have 2nd and 3rd strike capabilities which the US and the rest do not. In any confrontation with Russia the West would loose.

On top of that the Russians have spent billions on civil defence to protect their people where as in the west we have spent nothing. Whilst we have been closing bases the Russians have been building them under mountains.

We have been cought napping and now we are trying to play catch up. And before you say the US has load of exotic and secret weapons so do the Russians is just that they don't blab to the World of what they can and cannot do but we have had a little sneak preview in Georgia. That incident was a rude awakening to many Western Military planners who thought the Russians were growing sweedes back on the farm.

Are you related to Dick Cheney? Or are you just one of those "patriots?"

The spread of violence in army barracks is part of a much larger tale of the Russian military's decay. In late 1994, Pavel Grachev, then the defense minister, described the Russian army as the most neglected military force in the world. Conditions have deteriorated since.

www.nci.org...

Our Army has fallen into decay. Here for example is what Airborne CINC Georgiy Shpak says about the equipment of our troops: "Outmoded BMD-1 and BTR-D vehicles, adopted into the armament in 1969 and 1974 respectively, make up the bulk of the inventory. Up to 80 percent of them have been operated for 15 years or more. A total of 95 percent of the BMD-1s and BTR-Ds have undergone one if not two major overhauls. The number of vehicles of the latest generation, the BMD-3, is less 7 percent. If we do not take urgent steps, at the present rate of armored equipment restoration and repair, in ten years the Airborne Troops will be left with no vehicles at all."

Why don't your back your "insightful" opinion about Russia modernizing its military technology by posting a link to an article describing the process, so we could all feel that our tax dollars were well spent?

Can you guess by how many times the US military budget exceeds that of Russia? The only thing that is getting weaker in the US military, is self-control.

Stan whats the point of posting 14 year info, what relevance does it have today. No one is arguing that the Soviets neglected their armed forces but that was a long time ago and they have been modernising every arm of their forces. since then and if you want the info go and look for it just like I have to.

Maloy, expenditure does not relate to quality or capability. Whilst the US spends billions on just one super carrier the Russians can spend a fraction of that cost on just one missile that could sink that carrier. America's armed forces are only large because it wants to rule the Globe but the reality is is that its forces are not up to the job. Read up on past wars and the present situation in the ME. The mighty Us forces cannot even beat third rate poorly armed freedom fighters how do you think they would perform against a well equiped adversary, not very well indeed.

I don't have to look for anything. Everyone saw them going to Georgia.

The war also revealed that even the Russian Army's elite formations were fielding 1980s vintage equipment, and did not have night vision goggles or Global Positioning System (GPS) devices like some of their Georgian opponents. The lack of unmanned aerial vehicles also led to a Russian Air Force Tupolev bomber getting shot down on a routine reconaissance mission over Georgia, with the loss of the entire crew. Russian army commanders, like the Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, were reduced to issuing battlefield orders over easily intercepted cellphone lines due to a shortage of secure radios.

Americans don't have a problem to upkeep and modernize their armed forces (see $10 trillion of the national debt) but Russians can't borrow that way. The Russian army was huge thanks to Brezhnev who wrecked the economy to support the military build up. That huge military monster couldn't be fed after Kremlin let the market economy in.

Russians need to reorganize their military, make it lean and mean. They should take a lesson from 9/11. It took about $500,000 to train and equip bin Laden's commando to bring down one of the symbols of modern America.

The Joint Russia/Chinese Military machine has made substantial advances in their weapon's.

Americans protect freedom loving? Only an american believes that rubbish. America is the biggest threat in this world to world peace. The sooner it get's booted down to size the better.

While Americans are moaning that they are the biggest and the best, everyone else grew smarter and realised the best way to take america down is financially. Enjoy your weapons while you are standing in lines for food, because the crash of the american economy has been well planed is only just beginning. It will briefly affect the world, but as Ameirca collapses the world will rebound.
