I know. But the police are the people. They are not sentient robots that merely do the bidding of the government. I think they can be reached and brought to be on our side in any confrontation between the people and the government.

Wether it be a strike ore a protest, or a revolution, we need to get organized and take our country back

You and every other registered voter can do just that every election day.

Good point and I hope you are right. But I wonder what will it take for the police, military, gov't officials etc, to come to our side.

Really? Are there any candidates that are qualified and running this time around? You make it sound so simple!

I have been a registered voter for 13 years and my vote never seems to make a difference. In the 13 years I have been a voter things have seemed to just get worse, not better. I don't believe our system works so I don't think voting will make a difference.

It'll be tough. People won't do what's right for themselves or each other because they fear the repercussions of doing so. You have to convince all phases necessary for this movement or you'll ultimately convince none. If the police are still arresting citizens for standing up for what's right, if the military comes in to silence the disobedient, then those who want to stand with the protesters or activists will instead sit down and be quiet. They will fear for themselves, and in so doing they allow their hopes and dreams for the world to fade away.

I dont think we (americans) are willing to live like the aMISH OR any other self providing crues. Ithink at most you could get 15% at most. I feel that america has lost its edge(the edge that made us work hard enough to make a superpower win wars ect.ect alot of the youg kids have no clue what its like to not rather than have.
and i think the conversation went from going on strike to supporting ones self!!!wich is exactly the way it should have gone lol. well thread starter are you getting the feedback you wanted??

Let's just go soylent green, using the Government workers as chow-chow.
Maybe start by eating the folks at the IRS.
Then when they are all gone, we can do the potatoes and roasted boar thing.

I'd like the US to continue to be the strongest economy. If we simply shut down the economy, I'd think the factory owners would have to sell cheap to dictators and thugs in other countries. Once all the capital is owned by foreigners, they could simply let us starve until the few still alive willingly become slaves and give away all the rights the US conctitution gives us. We'd become a third world country exploited by a slightly richer country.

I'd think it would be far wiser if we all learn as much as we can, work really hard, earn lots of money, and buy all the stock of all the companies, and buy all the politicians. Then we could reduce the profit margin of all the companies (which we'd own at this point) to say 4 percent (they're 5 to 7 percent right now), and fire most of the government workers.

I think it's best to steer clear of the path these men have taken.

I was just reading a post about how Americans need another civil war. This got me to thinking about there being a better way. American's need to go on strike. Quit your jobs. The corporations and governement make money from us working. They depend on it. If we are slaves like some have said then just stop. Stop working, stop consuming. Just stop. Of course it won't work if just a handful participate. We have to beat them at their own game. In fact, lets ALL go on welfare. Let's take money from them. (Them being the gov't and corporate scabs that continue to work.)

I think I have said this before with little response but I would like to put it in it's own thread so I can get more minds chipping away at it. Please help me tinker with this idea. How can we make it work? Or tell me how it is doomed to fail so I can get over this and move on to something else. ***Please put some thought into your posts. I really don't want people just posting how stupid I am and how this will never work without an explanation of why.*** Okay, I'm putting on my turtle shell now to protect myself from the hurtful words that I'm probably going to have to endure.... here goes.

So instead of fascism you are proposing a kind of communism/socialism. You really need to know that they are not actually that different. But essentially people do need to have more control over the food system. If you can feed yourself you are on your way to self-sufficiency. I am reminded of the evil Henry Kissenger who said

"control the oil and you control nations, control the food and you control the people" - quite chilling really when you consider this in today's climate.

I've been lurking ATS for a while but after reading this post I signed up. I just need to say what a bad idea this is.

The biggest source of employment in the US is small business, not big corps. So, everyone going on strike would destroy small businesses whilst the big businesses would be more capable of weathering the storm. They'd just increase overseas outsourcing. When we are all broke and need money for food/rent/etc. we'd have nowhere to go back to work!

I think the government needs to step in to curb Wall Street greed... no bail-outs for banks who use questionable lending practices (such as subprime lending). We as a nation need to protect ourselves from unfair trade balances by establishing new requirements and making overseas outsourcing less economically attractive for businesses. It WILL take sacrifice on the home-front both in the form of higher prices and less exorberant worker benefits. (Let's thank the greedy labor unions for chasing jobs overseas.)

What we DON'T need to do is punish business. They are simply creatures of economic opportunity. We need out government to change the rules a bit, that's all. Make overseas outsourcing unattractive. Stop pandering to China. End illegal immigration. All of this results in higher prices, but that is the cost of making up for years of abuse. We can't borrow or tax our way out of this mess, it takes fundamental and substancial change.

Edit: The original poster says the government makes money on us working. The government doesn't make money, they spend it! And BTW, we aren't slaves here, this isn't a socialist nation (yet). Go start your own business if you like.

Let's not forget the power of money. If everyone took all their money out of the bank on the same day, even the poor could help bring the banks to their knees. If we could keep our money out of the banks for a whole month.......!

Great Idea, that would be crazy to see what the banks do. We take our money out money out, wait about a month, on the last day Everyone goes on strike for that one day period they were talking about, than well see what the government does.

And better yet, buy up gold. Gold could become a second currency! Then you'd have something with a real value.

But while you guys are on strike I'm gonna charge $100 per hour for my labor.

you don't need to go on strike....
just quit buying,
buy only what you need, pocket the money, invest it in gold, euros, or whatever, take the money out the economy and just sit on it....(you're gonna need it later when the layoffs start)

we can produce, earn money, but just stop the system in it's tracks by not consuming, and well, we'll have a little nestegg to help us through until they kick start things again.

I think the best way to "strike" would be to stop going to work in an office and work out on a field or farm to raise your own food. If you could get a significant amount of people, you could start a small community connected to the outside world, but self-sufficient.

Another thing to think about is an economic collapse. There will a massive amount of dissent, looting, crime, rape, lawlessness and death in the months and years to follow. Utilities would shut down, water and food shipments to suburbs will halt immediately, people will lose their houses, and a massive exodus from suburbia to the cities would occur.

To avoid this, all people involved with this project would need master skills in many parts of life from making soap to building or repairing buildings to planting food and doing harvest logistics if you live in New England like myself.

The best place to go in the event of a collapse is a farming community far away from any city. Maybe as far as 100-200 miles to be perfectly safe from starving, thirsty people with guns who have been walking for days. Or you could invest in your own protection. A militia would make sense. Everyone would invest in their own weapons for hunting and/or defense.

Without building a community you could inhabit one with people in it already. Some people may abandon their homes to be with family if a collapse were to occur so there would be open homes to loot or live in.

You don't even have to go this extreme. Maybe if you want to take baby steps to get less attatched to the system and more reliant on your friends, family and your own skills, you could start by not buying a huge amount of stuff you don't need. Repair things if possible. Parts are cheaper. Stop buying huge amounts of toys and junk. Get used to a healthier diet with fruits, veggies, whole grain bread, nuts, and lean meats. If the world does go to #, it's either a ton of junk food that won't be good for you at all as your diet, which will eventually run out, or you grow your own food and tend to your own livestock.

I think it could work. Any thoughts?

Thank you for pointing out some of the problems people will face in the future if something like this were to happen. I believe you are right, we would need to live on farms, and start to throwing away useless stuff. We would have to grow our own food, and tend to the livestock. I live in canada, which if you do not know consists of rural towns and farms. It does not have a lot of cities, there biggest one is Toronto. It would be the perfect place to go if something like this happened. All americans should flee to canada if this should take place. Do not go to the cities, because once America's Economy collapses, It will only take time before Canada's does too. Toronto will become a bloodsport, with people raping and looting. Personally i would be in Saskatchewan or B.C. Both good places, not many cities B.C. has tons of wood, but Saskatchewan has way more farms to grow food.
