UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said that the possibility of an end to the hostilities between Israel and Lebanon any time soon are dim. Kofi then also called for a long term solution to address the root problem in the Middle East. Both US and Israeli emissaries to the UN aid they would not consider a negotiated settlement with Hezbollah. Annan has also said that Hezbollah guerrillas have take the entire nation of Lebanon hostage and violating the border with Israel.

Annan called for an immediate 'stop' to hostilities to allow humanitarian groups access to the 500,000 people trapped inside Lebanon without food or medical supplies. The number was 'likely' to double to 1 million, Lebanese authorities have said.

More than 300 Lebanese have been killed, most of them civilians and many children, since fighting began last week. Several dozen Israelis have died as Hezbollah rained missiles of ever increasing and surprising range onto northern Israel. Hezbollah has claimed it has rockets that could reach Tel Aviv.

Annan said Hezbollah guerrillas had taken the entire nation of Lebanon hostage, and condemned them for continuing violations across the Blue Line border with Israel.

My first thought of this article is that it is put very straight forward. It is unlikely that there will be peace in the Middle East any time soon. But what was more important is that that Annan said what is needed is a plan to address the root cause of the problems. If something like that could be addressed then maybe in the long term we will see something good actually happen. Such as the One Hundred Million Dollars a year that Iran has been funding Hezbollah. Should Annan bring these issues to light then perhaps something will happen before the Middle east is completely destroyed.
