Not quite as bad as that, but pretty close to the wire.
Just been reading the 'Get Prepared for Emergencies' tab....... they are a hair's breadth from telling everyone to prepare a BOB for each member of the family.

Only in your head.

Godwin's law strikes again?

Ummm...no...In the heads of the Tories...and Rishi Sunak...

I merely commented about the absurdity of it...How it resembles a certain piece of history...and the doomed repetition it instills in those ever so fertile minds of the greater unwashed...then...here you are...scurrying to the defense of your appointed imbeciles...and their historical reach around...

Again...

Actually, if you read the thread, you will see that I called this "empty gesture politics."

Ummm...except that it isn't quite...empty...

It's a crude means to establish linkage in the minds that it's designed to influence...

Even if the the Tories lose the general election...Your political system is as much a one sided coin as mine...which merely stipulates that even if the premise is tabled...it will still be relevant in the general consensus that the continent needs to prepare for those hordes of Russians that will come streaming across the borders...and...that every one of the western purveyors of untruth foist into the heads of the greater unwashed...

Yours is not the only government in the European theater...braying about mandatory...and perhaps not so mandatory conscription...in the face of those imaginary evil hordes of Russians...

It's being serviced on every lip of NATO...from all of it's vassal governments...

It is not "conscription".

The military training bit is voluntary.

There is a choice of various forms of public service.

That said, I think it's not a great idea.

But it is not, by any stretch of the imagination, "conscription".

Simples.

dictionary.cambridge.org...

"the act or process of forcing people by law to join the armed services".

Seeing as how the proposal to do basic training is voluntary, this is not "conscription".

Nobody is "forced by law".

Understood now?

We can have conscripts in a time of dire need when life is ultimately cheap.

We're not there yet.

Domestically speaking if we ever do get there our government has seriously failed. On an international level the nukes will probably fly.

All those nations have very robust 'socialism' or a military completely different than ours in terms of capability. We have a failing system after 14 years of Tories and we have a professional military that's small but highly effective at projecting power.

Just look to France, it doesn't appear Macron's "social cohesion" plan is working despite it being 100% voluntary.

I think having a bigger pool of trained military reserves would be a great idea. Forcing reluctant 18 year old into military service isn't the way to achieve that.

Do you want the first contact with military service your countries youth have to be when the live rounds are flying and someone hands them a rifle?

I would like to think young poms had at least some exposure to small arms, fieldcraft and minor tactics.

It’s their country as well and they deserve to be able to defend it.

My 2p worth

Which I think having more trained reserves is important but let's make it people who actually want to be trained.

Incentivsed short-term military service could be the way.

The poster above you who brought up the idea of legal protections against being called to fight outside of the country makes a brilliant point.

Guarantee they will only be used on home soil;in defence of the nation.

Who knows local ground better than the people who grew there

I think it could work! A lot of todays youth seem lost with no direction. This would give them an understanding of discipline and commitment. Some just need pointing in the right direction.

So the directionless and the lost should join the army? What do you think the army is? A place for lost souls and troubled people?

The Army has a place for everyone and everyone has a place

The proposal is not calling anyone to "fight".

I don't agree with it but can we please be accurate?

Seems like empty gesture politics to me.

Common sense isn't so common...

I do understand the whole "hand to mouth" phenomenon which is why I'm always encouraging friends and family to get into hobbies like gardening or brewing. Anything that can become highly practical if the lights go out.

3 days without any form of assistance should be achievable for most tbh even if all they have is cheap soda and the cheapest tinned food money can buy. Both of those can be acquired for less than £2 per day per person. Long shelf life too.

Have lots of carrots and only a short, slender (padded?) stick.

Yes, I’m glad this is domestic service only

A place for lost souls and troubled people lol. No not at all, I served and have seen the physical and psychological change in people when completing training. Ask any veteran most will tell you it made me into the man I am. I’ve met lots of people who regretted not taking the queens shilling, lots of today’s youth no longer mix and prefer to sit in front of a screen all day, so yes it’ll get my vote.

Maybe its time to start to unwoke them....where better to start than with some square bashing?

Square bashing eh, they will probably that means them.

I certainly wouldn't support something like National Service of old, but we have to do something.

Have to do something indeed, again I'm not predominantly against the idea, as long as its applied evenly as opposed to only being directed at specific demographics.

To be honest Andy that's not something I'd considered but you're quite right, it should be applied to everyone regardless of socio-economic background etc.

I think it would be beneficial to those from more privileged upbringings to mix with those less fortunate than themselves in such an environment.

I actually think this has the making of a good plan.
Its a shame the Tories wont be in power to implement it.
There are far too many feral youths in the UK who simply dont have any respect for anyone or anything and they have no fear of breaking the law as they know any smart ass lawyer (which is paid for by the tax payer) will get them off with a slapped wrist.
