So if you engage in vandalism, you won't get punished if you are black or trans, but you will be punished if you are straight and white. That's certainly what it looks like. What a woke mess Portland public schools are. I feel sorry for the people who have to go there. The folks running them have the woke mind virus and are screwing everything up.

Portland Schools, Race and Gender Must Be Taken Into Account Before Disciplining

Public schools in Portland now have to take students' gender identity and race into account before disciplining them as part of a new collective bargaining agreement that ended a month-long strike.

Portland Association of Teachers union called off industrial action after securing a 13.75 percent raise for educators over the next three years last week.

The agreement has made waves in the fine print, however, as it appears students will now have race and gender identity taken into account when it comes to punishing them.

From what I read, it was the teachers themselves that pushed for this to be part of the new agreement. I think the children are incredibly fortunate to have teachers who so clearly care about the wellbeing of their pupils and their individual needs.

I think the teachers will be more concerned with securing their pay rise to be honest if they are anything the the underpaid sorts over here.

But kids should be treated and punished equally, or else all you are teaching them is one rule for some and another for the rest.

Are school shootings mostly white kids?

It was part of a negotiated pay deal.

As I understand it, it is about recognising that some children can end up being punished twice, once by teacher, then at home. This allows teachers to use their discretion where necessary. Not all pupils are equal.

I think that has more to do with a lack of oversight by all adults rather than a lack or excess of discipline.

Quite clearly according to this....but they should be.

Everyone is equal in the eyes of the law.

Please explain why you feel teachers are qualified to discern just who is and who isn't eligible for punishment and what grounds and criteria are used?

Ok but here is the thing, most kids who get into trouble in school, and are punished, their parents are going to have something to say regarding the incident that landed their child with the school punishment if indeed they give a rat's arse about their children.

And the parents may well deem to add additional punishments at home regarding their child's antics at school depending on what transpired or went down.

Again the justice met out in educational establishments has to be of equal measure, else it is not justice but favoritism.

Indeed.

Some pupils are more equal than others.

Oh what farce to come from the hard-fought Civil Rights movement decades ago. To see the moments of segregation pass thankfully, only to come back full circle with vengeance.

Must be an odd history class where this gets still taught, unless that important time in an American history has been replaced with CRT.

Glad I still learned about MLK. What a hero. Who will replace such a monument of an American now I wonder.

Pretty sure CERN switched tracks on the timeline we live in….

Can’t wait for the Justice system to catch up the progressive ideals of Public Education.

Well. If teachers can discern vulnerable students and encourage them to identify a certain way and then hide their gender beliefs from friends and family, why would they stop there?

You do realise some children live in abusive households don't you? That's more what we are talking about. If you know a kid can't do their homework because of such difficulties, would you as a teacher want to exacerbate that. It is all about giving the teacher discretion to do that.

Again, abusive parents. Why make a child's life any harder than it is if you don't need to?

And you do realise that not all children live in abusive households?

If the teacher issues homework and does not make sure the child completes the homework, then he/she is not doing his job accordingly, and the child a disservice.

Again you cannot have one rule for some and another for the rest.

Also if any teacher becomes aware that a child is living in an abusive household they are obligated to contact social services, homework being the least of their concerns.

As has been pointed out, Social Services should then be involved.
No child should be in an abusive environment - unfortunately far too many are.

That's a whole subject that society as a whole should be addressing but sadly tends to neglect.

Why make a child's life any harder than it is if you don't need to?

And why compound the child's issues by allowing them to miss out on much needed education and giving them the impression that they are somehow absolved from the same responsibilities as other people?

Its sort of similar to excusing a peadophile because he was nonced himself.

I agree that children in abusive home environments should be afforded more attention and consideration but they should not be excused for bad behaviour and I really fail to see what race or gender have to do with it.

Perhaps you could enlighten me?

Should children with abusive parents not be removed to safety and the horrible bastards prosecuted to the full extent of your law?

Teachers should concentrate on teaching.

Yes, they have a duty to safeguard student well being but they should not engage in gender identification and other associated bollocks.
Teachers are teachers and not Social Workers or Psychologists.

Big assumption there amigo.

For that matter why let abusive teachers make the call?

I’ll wait.

Boom.

No argument here. Astute observation. Succinctly put.

Unless of course that pay raise stipulates these new responsibilities. Which of course requires more schooling.

I’m sure these Portland teachers have extra time for that.

That same question could be posed for gang shootings. I wonder which has the most casualities? (sarc)

I'm surprised there isn't a massive teacgher shortage countrywide as a result of all the complex policies being enacted.

That is why they have the likes of guidance counselors and other specialised staff members there to spot the likes of abuse or neglect by my guess.
