Sorry, this is a bit new to me.
I did install a new HD about 20 years ago, so I forgot some of the stuff I did.

You have to go to the PCs website and download them. (by make and model) . Some have an update program.

The only reason that it is recommended to do a full format, that will detect bad sectors if present.
Quick format is fine as it is a new hard drive.
In fact , I cannot remember the last time I did a full format.

How do I know what I will need, or will it be obvious somewhere?
Sorry for these questions, but I want to be prepared as possible, with as few surprises as possible.
This is more or less my first "solo" HD change.

If it is the age you say, the drives are most likely SATA (1 or 2), thus the controller is.
I would say no.

Unless you have programs you have to use that are windows exclusive, I’d say f# windows. There are many flavors of Linux that are user friendly. I don’t regret the switch.

If you look it up on HPs website by exact make and model, it will take you to the driver update page for that system. Be like Pokemon. Gotta get em all .
HP may have an update program either for download or ran from their website.
They do.
HP drivers
They have a "Detect My System" button.

Just tested. It was trying to detect my system.
Good luck with that as my system is custom built by me.

Actually I'm somewhere around 374g used of 1 T, PC...250g of 1 T...1 T external 1/2 full, and a 500g almost full!!

Hey...the other day, I cleaned out the PC of a lady friend from Europe. I've no idea why...but she had 971gs in the recycle bin...it was barely running...

Dumped it and WHAM! Hyper speed.

You need Linux!

On those older laptops: if you can gain entry to the bios then double check that the hard drive default read setting did not flip to IDE from SATA or vice versa as that will cause a BSOD every time.

It really wasn't an old laptop.

It was an issue of bad sectors almost from the get-go. Last time we buy a computer from a big box store.
