As residents of Tampa, Florida prepare for a direct hit from Hurricane Idalia, they are being warned that cars and generators may not function properly due to contaminated gas and fuel.

Gas contamination may cause cars and generators to "not properly function," Florida officials say

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services warned of a “potentially widespread fuel contamination caused by human error” that could affect the functioning of vehicles and generators that were filled with the contaminated fuel.

The fuel was distributed by Citgo from the Port of Tampa to a number of convenience and wholesale stores, many in the area that soon may be impacted by Idalia.

People who filled up after 10 a.m. ET Saturday, August 26 may be affected, the department said.

“Contaminated gasoline and diesel have the potential of causing engine damage or affecting operability. Impacted stations have been asked to stop selling gas until the contaminated fuel is replaced and tanks are cleaned,” the department said.

The “Florida Department of Agriculture of Consumer Services advises consumers that vehicles or generators may not properly function,” the statement said.

Well this is the first time I've ever heard of an issue with human error contaminated fuel, and it just so happens to be in a place that is about to be hit by a hurricane.

Wow! What are the odds?

I hope there is a criminal investigation done into this matter, because this "error" is likely going to cost lives.

“Contaminated gasoline AND diesel"

How on earth do you contaminate BOTH fuels due to a human error ??

must have been down at the refinery or storage /transfer tanks at fuel farm. going to the link provide in the OP's source article. there are 30 locations listed that received fuel, three of them BJ's wholesale. those are fairly large station with lots of pumps. bet they got large tanks
a tanker depending on size holds 5000 to 10,000 gallons. one tanker is not going fill 30 location unless they have awful small tanks.

no mention of what the contamination is.

Don't worry, I'm sure diversity hire Mayor Pete Buttigieg, our Transportation Secretary is bicycling around with cameras following him for PR and has a script about how gasoline is racist ready to go!

You can leave water out of it. It is very easy to separate gasoline and diesel from water. Get a clear container, dump the contaminated in it, let it settle so the water ends up on the bottom and siphon the fuel off the top. Another way is to put the fuel in a freezer and then strain the ice out of it.

Diesel and Gasoline will also separate if they are left to settle.

DeSantis is already sunk, it's "the people" they are after. Just look at Maui. This is intentional sabotage to make life as miserable as possible for citizens facing hard times. If it does hit hard, just pay attention to the feds response compared to past weather tragedies. No money for US but money for everyone else!

They are saying that some of the Citgo gasoline was contaminated with diesel fuel.

Here's more information:

Your Gas Tank

If you bought gas along Florida's Gulf Coast over the weekend, you may have gotten diesel fuel in your gas tank by mistake.

Florida officials warned Sunday that any fuel purchased after 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26 at stations supplied by Citgo from the Port of Tampa has a strong likelihood of being contaminated with diesel fuel. And that's really not good for your car. Not the best thing to have happen when there is a potentially major hurricane heading your direction in the next couple of days.

There's a list of affected gas stations in the article.

Has Citgo stated whether they'll pay to have their affected customers fuel systems towed (can't risk damage by starting the engine), drained, cleaned, and reimbursed?

At look east for those who survive the storm?

If it was sabotage, why tell people about it , let alone 2 days before the hurricane hits which allows people time to get new fuel ?
Bad gas batches happen, but are not self reported.
This seems like a responsible notification to me.
The fuel making industry is far from perfect especially with all the additives & detergents added into modern fuels . One wrong keystroke & bingo !
Bad gas .
Im not buying a conspiracy on this

Bunker oil , kerosene, diesel & gas are made within the same process & it’s a stratification of oil crude into many fuel types .
So with computer controlled valves , it’s easier than you think.

Sabotage huh? That's an interesting suggestion.

If it was an intentional "mistake", I don't think that the entire company would have been involved, but there could have been one, or a small group of bad apples, and that is why an investigation into the matter is more than in order.

I'm glad Citgo self reported this incident and are self investigating.

People need two days before a hurricane hits to prepare for it. The last thing they need is having to find a mechanic to drain their gas tanks and a tow truck, right before a hurricane.

Bingo, is an interesting choice of a word, and I'm not buying that. I don't think that making bad gas is just one keystroke away. A company that size should have safeguards preventing simple mistakes like that, and NOBODY working at a gasoline company should not understand the difference between gasoline and diesel fuel.
