Ukraine official: forces may pull out of key eastern city

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — The Ukrainian military might decide to pull troops back from the key stronghold of Bakhmut, an adviser to Ukraine’s president said Wednesday as Russia pursued a bloody, months-long offensive to capture the city.

“Our military is obviously going to weigh all of the options. So far, they’ve held the city, but if need be, they will strategically pull back,” Alexander Rodnyansky, an economic adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, told CNN. “We’re not going to sacrifice all of our people just for nothing.”

The battle for Bakhmut, in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, has become a symbol of Ukrainian resistance as defenders hold out against relentless shelling and waves of Russian troops taking heavy casualties in a months-long campaign to capture it.

Rodnyansky noted that Russia was using the best troops of the Wagner Group to try to encircle the city. The private military company known for brutal tactics is led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, a rogue millionaire with longtime links to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Prigozhin said Wednesday that he so far had seen no signs of a Ukrainian withdrawal from the city. He maintained that Kyiv has in fact been reinforcing its positions there.

I've heard reports that Ukraine is losing hundreds of troops a day at Bakhmut. An American volunteer/mercenary/something who is an ex-marine estimated that the average survival time on the front lines was around 4 hours!!!

All the Western weaponry in the world won't make a bit of difference if Ukraine doesn't have any troops left to use it.

I'm positive that this is going to turn out to be a massive money laundering scheme, with the majority of all that funding disappearing into private bank accounts.

eventually, death totals will dictate an end to the war, and once tallied, a winner will be crowned. That winner will stand on a mountain made of dead bodies, and declare victory!

War is the best way to go about things, we are so advances as a civilzation here in 2023. I shiver as I lament how proud I am of how far we have come as a species.

These kind of troop movements are going to be fluid for a while. There are some correlations between war and the first few microseconds when engaging an electrical circuit. Forces at play kinda stuff I guess?

With Nazis on both sides of this battle, surly they get that 'national' part of national socialism by now? I know there are some global forces going on that don't. How did that work out for the last person trying to take over the world?

There's no real way to accurately validate that but personally, everyone I know or come across wants absolutely NOTHING to do with this.

Seems undeniable that Bakhmut is about to fall to Russian forces.
