Dec 22 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that Russia wants an end to the war in Ukraine and that this would inevitably involve a diplomatic solution.

Putin made the comments a day after U.S. President Joe Biden hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in the White House and promised him continued and unwavering U.S. support.

"Our goal is not to spin the flywheel of military conflict, but, on the contrary, to end this war," Putin said. "We will strive for an end to this, and the sooner the better, of course."

White House spokesman John Kirby said Putin has "shown absolutely zero indication that he's willing to negotiate" an end to the war, which began when Moscow sent troops into Ukraine on Feb. 24.

"Quite the contrary," Kirby told reporters during an online briefing. "Everything he (Putin) is doing on the ground and in the air bespeaks a man who wants to continue to visit violence upon the Ukrainian people" and "escalate the war."

He won't.

"diplomatic solution" means he gets what he wants and Ukraine gets what he allows.

Right after Biden promises another 44 billion (that we don’t have to give out) to the Ukraine.

Why is Putin saying this now? Because he knows he can’t win a proxy war with the US.

Took him 10 months to figure that out.

I thought world leaders were supposed to be smart?

Mine is complete speculation of course but FWIW so is yours, what is it going to hurt to go through a meeting or 3? You make the effort. Even a temporary cease-fire saves lives.

I suspect the west is winning because we were willing to outspend Russia, still, somebody is gonna have to tell me how that makes a damn bit of difference here in America.

I know it definitely impacts Europe who knows it may be as simple as Putin wanting the sanctions lifted and to resume the gas shipments, without taking territory.

Like I said in the follow-up, you still have to try, where did I say appeasement? Hell he might be looking for a way out to save face. FAWK.

If you actually send people to try and negotiate then we absolutely know, if he is serious or not. The west is in a superior position, they can negotiate with strength and don't have to make concessions

Again all he wants and what he will settle for are likely two different things, we can't know till they set down and try. 10 months of killing and billions of dollars haven't stopped it yet.

Not like they’ve gained anything from it… in fact, all they’ve done is lose from it.

Truth be told though, it is kind of the US’s fault this war is costing them so much.

Russia deployed there army to the Ukrainian border and claimed it was just a military exorcise and that they had no intention of invading… which in hindsight was just like a starving feral dog testing the waters seeing if it was safe to go in and collect the scraps.

The US should of put boots on the ground in Ukraine the second that happened and warned Russia to not cross the border… if they had of done that, then this meaningless BS war never would have started in the first place.

Here's the thing, we've seen similar statements from Putin and the separatists for the past, nearly, nine years. What always happens is a ceasefire is declared, negotiations are scheduled, things drag on before everything falls apart because Russia is not negotiating from a place of good faith, then come the spring Russia is ready to launch a major offensive because they spent the ceasefire reinforcing and resupplying.

If Putin is actually serious about ending the war then he should pull all of his forces out of Ukraine with most them pulled back to at least Moscow.

Where did I say I believe him.

I'm essentially saying call his bluff, and set up negotiations, when and if they fail, then the war and killing can proceed unabated. Then we know at least we tried and so does Putin.

Ukraine is being invaded by another country.

again the west is dealing from a position of strength, it will be obvious soon enough and the west can withdraw from negotiations at anytime

ie they don't have to wait till Spring, hell give him your terms officially face to face. What is going to hurt,mif he refuses UKraine an continue any and all of it's winter war plans

As you said, Ukraine is in a position of power. If Putin truly wants to end the war and begin negotiations then he needs to make some kind of gesture that he's actually willing to negotiate in good faith, like pulling his forces back.

Well I’m sure we would’ve contributed in some kind of supportive role had the US requested it… but I’m a little skeptical that Australia rolling up in Ukraine and telling Russia to back down would’ve had the same deterrent effect as if the US did it.
