IN HINDSIGHT, did IAN turn out to be 50% or 75% or 100% as bad as predicted, or even worse?

There was a lot of buildup as the storm cleared CUBA, but here we are 24 hours after IAN cleared Florida, and the IAN news segments on websites are rapidly disappearing.

Absolutely worse than most could imagine.

I say this over and over again, most landfalling storms are over hyped and the effects are not too bad, then we have a small fraction of storms that are much worse than expected.

The problem is most folks get complacent after going through several over hyped storms then get caught off guard when the monster storm hits.

No doubt that Ian will be the costliest storm in Florida history. It terms of $$ of damage it will likely end up 2nd behind Katrina for US storms and has a small chance of being even costlier than Katrina given it is still flooding folks in the out in the Carolinas, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and even Ohio as I write this .

I think Ian will be bad because I think it flooded a good half of a major metro. Hurricanes don't often inundate large cities with monster storm surges that completely. They hit big cities, but Ian hit just right to drive storm surge up into a confined bay making it way, way worse. So it will a little like a Katrina. The advantage, if we want to call it that, is that in this case, we aren't talking about a large bowl. The water can run off and rain away where it really couldn't in NOLA.

As a SWFL resident these are some of the links I prefer to check status of the hurricane with no spin or journalist on canoe with .5" of water on the street or guy in rain coat leaning forward.

Thanks for the links, stay safe down there love Cape Coral and of course Naples/Marco Island

Thank you i'm in the Naples area and stocked with with alcohol .

Naples looks devastated. Let us know how you made out! Hope that alcohol helps relieve the stress.

Thanks Olaru, I'm afraid my alcohol and myself may have caused the floods. During the storm the winds weren't to bad and it looked like we were passed the worst parts, so I grabbed a couple coronas. Then after a couple of sips the floods came and we had to evacuate since I had my parents with me. It came up so fast that I was Afraid that if we didn't leave right at that moment we weren't going to get a another chance. So we left the house and it appeared that everyone had the same thoughts ,since it was a mass exodus from the street.

The funny thing is that I had asked the the old timers in the neighborhood (40+ yrs living here) the day before if the neighborhood had a history of flooding during hurricanes, since this was our first hurricane in this house. All told me the neighborhood had never flooded in the past and not to worry. Hence I blame my premature celebration of opening the ronas and asking about the neighborhood flooding history for the storm.

After we evacuated to my parents house and settled in , I went to check on my house but we barely made it out of the neighborhood before the floods started to hit the area. I turned back around and once again was evacuating my parents to head on over to my cousins house . Luckily they didn't flood nor did they even lose power. So we stayed the night there.

We had to use canoes to get some of our belongings out of my house but amazingly enough only the garage flooded. The water literary stopped right at the lip of the front and rear doors. Unfortunately many of the neighbors weren't as lucky and their houses flooded , but luckily not one of them was hurt. One of the neighbors down the road had to get on their roof when the floods came.

Just got back internet last night and we had power a couple days after.

Yep, it wen't away almost as fast as it came. By the next day most of the water in the streets were gone .

Desantis walked up to the hurricane and said "blow this" whilst pointing to unbelievably large genitals. Then put his shades on and rode off into the sunset.

I'm glad to see you post and that you and your family are doing pretty well considering. I was a bit worried when I hadn't seen you post.

My sister in law fared well. The canal flooded up to their lanai, but then receded. The new roof and pool cage all were fine, just the boat doc damaged. They estimate power restored by the 8th.

As for our place on Sanibel. Sigh. So very sad. Ours is on the east side of the island. The roads are broken in places over there. Supposedly homeowners can start coming back to grab some things on Wed if they can get themselves there by boat. Waiting for them to upload the inspections and see how it fared before we go forward. Just sad.

Glad to hear about SIL fared well. We got power a couple of days after the storm, but no internet until last night. so just getting caught back up. We managed to get the garage back in order by yesterday evening and now currently helping my sister with her place. She lives on the same street as me but had about 6" of water in her place as did most of the neighbors unfortunately.

Sorry to hear about you place on Sanibel. I haven't had time to even look at the news or the impact of the storm ,but my BIL is a fire chief and was saying that area got hit pretty bad. My sons friend went out with his parents to the Sanibel area with their boat to assist the people to and from the island . However the Coast Guard was out there telling people to not do that and to return home.

If you need me to go and check anything let me know, glad to help if I can.

Ugh, sorry for your sister. Flood water is such a mess even when it's not a whole lot.

Thanks I appreciate it. Yeah the island is basically decimated besides the causeway issue. I don't know how it will fare in the long run.
