Perhaps they were carved as sockets for a free standing statue to give it stability and guide to erect it. Perhaps over the years in the desert erosion diminished its depth?

never thought of that either, another possibility but what about the single carved footprint 60 feet or so away

That is an interesting looking temple,damn shame it got bombed.
There are also quite a few giant footprints across much of Asia,often thought of as the prints of Hanuman,Ram or Vishnu by the Hindus/Buddhists.

While many look carved,some do not and are believed to be from a distant time when their gods walked the earth.
Whatever the truth,the Hindus believe it-they see all the stories in their religious texts as legit "history" which is pretty mind blowing as there are countless depictions of not only giants,but non human entities,hybrid chimera type beings,and intergalactic space battles between strange aliens in spaceships with exotic weapons.

There seems to me to be a huge crossover of gods and themes from ancient Assyrian/Mesopotamian culture and the Hindi/Buddhist cultures and even the South American Maya/Inca/Olmec/Aztec cultures.

Native Americans have folklore about giants too. Who knows where the folklore ends and truth begins?

But like their 7 worlds belief, it's believed and has been passed along from many tribes.

Of course they were carved is the most likely explanation, but why?

#1 It had to take a little while to carve those bastards out, why spend all that time on something that seems so superficial?

#2 Who was it for? did it really make them feel better having the giant footprints ie what purpose?

#3 Was it just somebody tagging?

Maybe their god or one of them was supposed to have stood there.

interesting that these places always seem to get destroyed by conflicts
loads of ancient sites get damaged or completely destroyed, I often wonder if its on purpose

Quite possibly to represent the presence of a god in the temple's Holy of Holies.
