Men can leave college because traditionally male non-college careers (mechanic, electrician, truck driver) pay a good wage. Traditional female non-college careers (LPNs and daycare workers) pay nothing.

One of my theories of why traditional female jobs pay less is these jobs are subsidized by the government which creates the problem. Try to pay a plumber $12 per hour and they will just walk away. But that's what we pay a nurses aid because that's what the Government will pay. The workers don't walk away but instead get enough just to keep their families alive through tax credits and government programs.

But the main reason why college doesn't pay more is that it used to be a way for the elite to justify their power and money. Bill who was working for a company for 25 years was never promoted and instead they hired the 22 year old cousin of the owner. Before college was open to everyone, they could use the college degree excuse because Bill was too poor to go to college and the 22 year old wasn't. Now that Bill can take out $50k in student loans, Bill though he was going to get promoted - nope they still hired the 22 year old cousin.

I find the title of this post disturbing, because as I approach retirement in the tech field I have worked in for almost 40 years, I have noticed that to have even a chance at a decent position where you can advance at my company, you need at least a BS. And guess what? Those applicants leapfrog right over the tenured employees without degrees to the better positions. When I started in my field back in the early 80s, you could get a job with a high school diploma and good math skills and maybe a little community college under your belt. Not any more. If I were someone young, I would think twice about giving up on a degree, because the days of getting a decent job without one are fast fading and it will only get worse as AI and automation evaporates more and more positions. And yes, as another poster mentioned a lot of friends and family get the first pick anyway these days.

And yet, abandoning an education is not the answer.

Do we really want a populous that's even more ignorant than it already is? It's substantially the reason why we are where we are today with all the b*******.

What needs to happen is a major disruption in how we educate people.

I'm not sure what the solution is, but I know it's not abandoning education and it's certainly not participating in the educational system we have today.

Very depressing.

Thank you! As I was reading comments I was shaking my head the entire time until I came to yours.
Education is the key. People don't see it but tptb are trying to make education harder and less "desirable" for most people.
Don't fall for it. I've never regretted going to college, not for one second.
Nobody can take away your education, remember that.

I think college should be public like high school and grade school. Who thought it was ok to stop at high school? Why can't it be college?

Most jobs don’t require college education.

Businesses use to train.

Businesses cut costs and started forcing the training requirements to be “college educations”.

Blue collar training and jobs are the backbone of the US. Have been and always will be. People can shun these jobs all they want but they pay well and you will be learning on the job your entire career.

Women and men who look down upon the blue collar work force should be ashamed of themselves.

College education needs to go back to support the careers that need it and not be hijacked and made to believe that it is needed for all jobs.

If the college you want to attend has a course in woketard or requires the use of proper pronouns or has an anti-fascist park meeting to bash all political idealism with (except their ideas that is), or purports the idea that we support rape culture or that 1619 is a good thing to teach or that all white people have it good because of the color of our skin, don’t attend that college.

If it wasn't for online colleges no way I have any degree let alone a masters.

So much junk you have to put up with in a brick and mortar schools I wouldn't suggest any guy walk through the doors of a college.

Thank YOU!

Clearly several people in this thread completely missed my point.

There was a time when only the elite were educated. In fact, in some societies if you weren't part of a certain social class it was illegal for you to become educated, not to mention the similar approach to women in the past.

TPTB prefer an uneducated populace. It's easier to control and manipulate things.

What I see happening is a reversion to those times, even if the beneficiaries are slightly different.

Like I said, it's all very depressing.

Here's a thought for you. According to the 14th Amendment and the emancipation clause reparations over the civil war and slavery are banned to the Government. Since I imagine that the school is getting government money point out to the school that the 1619 project is reparations.

Therefore it's illegal for them to have it in their syllabus. Just a thought.

A lot of studies aren't worth anything in the real world. I convinced a friend to major in project management instead of getting an MBA (I know many people with MBA's who work in sales barely making a living.) His first job upon graduation is paying him $35 an hour because he has an actual skill set as a project manager and not just "general" business knowledge.

Generally, people degrees still need to be trained for years in order to become project managers. My friend already had this skillset upon graduation.

Nowadays, I am seeing more and more universities offering degrees based on mastering a particular skillset, and not just degrees based on "education." And this is a good thing. For example, a masters in digital marketing would make you job ready right off the bat, instead of learning about general business.

I really do believe that a person needs to spend 3-4 years mastering a particular skillset. If your degree is just teaching general useless knowledge, then your resume is no better than someone who didn't go to college and also doesn't have any particular skills.

I have a bacherlors in marketing so I know a lot of people have fallen for the marketing when it comes to going to college. It's romanticized.

Assuming women going to college will be higher wage earners is a stretch. They most likely are not going into degrees that have high wealth generation. A plumber or electrician will out earn a teacher or a gender studies degree 8 days a week.

I repectfully disagree. Education is more than a a degree. Education nowadays is more like ecomomic slavery with $1.3 TRILLION in student debt which cannot be erased.

By education, are you ruling out trade schools and community colleges?

Cuz if so, what I am reading is some elitist nonsense.

And lets assume everyone gets a degree. That would make a degree worthless, no? I mean if there are 10 million techer with a B.S, then it will go to Masters...and PH. D's to weed them out....and then to what skool you went to. Nah....10% should go to college...at least 10% of 18 year-olds.

Education is EVERYTHING.

But that doesn't automatically mean a university education in some pointless subject that has no or at best limited practical application in the real world.

I have a friend who has a degree in astrophysics.....he has never used it for anything other than to prove he has a degree.
During lockdown he was driving for Morrisons but recently started work in a mutual friends steel fabrication business.

How many Social Scientists does the world need?
How many Criminologists?
How many Culture and Media Studies graduates?
Do we really need more Contemporary Dance courses?
Surely the world is over burdened with PPE graduates?
Then of course there is the emergence of woke indoctrination like Gender Studies etc.

All whilst there is a real shortage of Engineering graduates and the UK is suffering from a lack of tradesmen in skills like Bricklaying, Joinery, Plumbing, Electricians and technical skills /areas.

We need more vocational education at an earlier age and we need to make these jobs/career paths more attractive by paying people a decent wage.

As the world becomes more automated, those that can fix and repair the machines in our society will be the most valued.

But you have to know math, science, engineering, etc to do that.

Of course you need to be educated in those disciplines.....but not to degree level.

If someone wants to become a Maintenance Technician then its obvious that a large part of their training will be in those fields that you mentioned but only that what is specifically required.

My point is we need to put more emphasis on vocational studies rather than just academic studies....particularly woke academic studies.

I can't even imagine a straight, white, USA loving male attending one of these hate filled, reversed racism, propaganda spouting institutions. And paying for that abuse on top that.

You made my point for me. This has been going on longer than people realize. 2003 my employer sent me to a local University to get my degree in Engineering. I was required to attend an "orientation" in the Student Union the first day of classes. I signed in and was given a blue nametag and was told to wear it the first day. I go into the Union and right away I have people bitching me out. I walked around for about 20 minutes and went to my first class. It was a Writing class in the English Department. I sat through the class and was getting ready to leave when the Instructor asked me to stay for a minute. When everybody had left he says to me "I don't like the Military. If you don't come back to class I will give you a 'C'." I said "How did you know I was a Veteran?" He told ne that blue nametags were given to veterans. I told him that I would be at every class and if he downgraded my grade I'd go to the Department Head and the Dean of Students. I then went an had a discussion with the Dean. When I graduated, the Dean and I went for a beer. He told me "You're a nice guy, but, I'm glad you are gone." My Alma Mater has since eliminated it's Engineering program in favor of a Communications Program. The Engineering students were they type of people that they no longer wanted on campus.

With what I've seen from the satellite campus of one of our State Universities that is just down the road from where I work, I can't see how a White, Male Heterosexual Conservative student can survive these days. Several of the Engineers that we have, who recently graduated have told me that you keep your head down, parrot back to the Instructors and Professors the views that they give you and try to survive.

Out of the 84 credits I needed for my Degree only 32 were core classes necessary to do the job. I had already taken most of the Math, Physics and Technical Writing classes when I got my Associate's in Machine Design. I graduated that in 1999 so only a little over three years had passed. I had no need for classes like "Romance Languages, Art Appreciation, British Literature" and others.

Something that people don't realize about college, is that certain Degree tracks are money losers. 90% of those losing tracks are for Liberal Art Degrees. So what they do, is to make students in non-losing tracks take classes in the losing tracks to subsidize them. When I went there were about 12 people waiting for one particular class, so that they could graduate. The problem was that not enough people signed up for the class. I believe that the minimum was 20 at the time. 12 people, including myself, had our electives changed forcing us to take the class, so that it could be offered. It wasn't a difficult class, it was almost interesting and a few of us blew out the Bell Curve. The instructor offered a lot of "extra credit". I think I had a score of 125%.

If they had said that I had to take 84 credits any way, there were plenty of Math and other classes that I would have taken.

Another scam is "activity fees". They are tacked on to every credit. If the majority of your classes are evening classes, you get no benefit from those fees. This is where the Liberal Socialists get their funding for all of the crap that they do.
