They say it is to date the most mutated covid strain so far. And by being as transmissible as Delta while being better able to evade the immune system means it will soon supplant Delta as the most dominant strain worldwide.

Granted an RNA based virus which keeps on mutating (like HIV, and hence never a vaccine for it yet).
