Oh my.

I was picturing them in their "furry" costumes, hacking systems.

Actually, can't get the image out of my head now ffs.

ETA: And who named this "GETTR"? Larry the Cable Guy?

Costumers and furries are two very different things, though media and some of the younger set conflate the two. There's several of the First Fans (not an official designation; just a convenient one here) who worked at Apple and did development work on operating systems. At least two of the others worked for communications providers and worked with routers, etc. And there's a number who worked with gaming companies and did software dev for them.

They were the folks I called on when I set up websites for local police departments and said "see if you can hack this one." (since I'd talked with them about exploits first, mine were secure. But I did have them tested.)

(come to think of it, none of these folks costume or have any interest in it though they're still active.)

But, yeah. Amusing picture. Or think of the Bitcoin "Doge" typing away!

And I agree on the name... really poor marketing choice.

I don't think many people are aware of the platform. it isn't a trending hashtag on Twitter (or if it is, #Loki blew it out of the water, along with a lot of other things.) There's only a handful of news stories on it, and only around 500,000 downloads on Google Play, far fewer than the number of visitors to Trump's defunct blog of recent memory.

The "if you build it, they will come" idea is a poor business model in most cases.

That is not what happened. The right controlled everything for 2-3 full generations. In 2020 we find that the left has taken some of that control, and they used the same nonsense, freedom stifling tactics the right used for 2-3 full generations. And the right lost their minds over it (rightfully). And went to make their own platform so they could go back to doing what they had done prior.

The reality of this is that for the last 20 years that the internet has been widely used, both "sides" have brigaded the everloving hell out of each others platforms. Its just that today, due to the "right" ignoring public schools for the last 30 years, the people in control are lefty's.

This is just more of the same. Decades of chasing hippies off public spaces, not letting black people have the rights God gave them, Red Scares in Congress, the FBI tracking and harassing anyone that wasn't toeing that conservative line. After all that, the right has the nerve to whine. Its ridiculous.

Is this a joke?

NOBODY has attempted censorship like this in the United States on this scale.

Nobody.

EVER.

Democrats in confederacy don't count.

Nor do George's goons.

They didn't even do the Roswell followers like this.

And I'd still be here screaming about it either way.

What democrats have been doing is wrong.

And dangerous.

Nothing you say can make it otherwise.

But democrats could choose to end the insanity.

But democrat censorship is not likely to end voluntarily.

Supporting democrat's censorship efforts.

By any means necessary.

Disgusting.

But expected.

That no one could wear a swimsuit in 1910 seems to disagree with you. During the Civil War speaking out against the draft could get you put in prison, even as a reporter. We aren't talking about speaking out on someone else's platform...we are talking about speaking out in general. If you can stand in your front yard and say what you want, then I think we aren't as far down as you are trying to pretend.

you aren't being censored. You are just being told not to say certain things in someone else's house. And that is fair. If the brownshirts drag you from your home, we can chat.

I'm WAY too conservative to know anything about furlings or costumers, and have no interest.

Whatever floats their respective boats. I wouldn't censor anyone for it, unless it was obscene.

Yes! PenTesting is a thing. I love playing with Kali, but probably am more likely to break something than hack it.

GETTR got learnt the hard way I guess.

Maybe Larry is doing their IT?

Democrats took rights away from black folks, but nice try.

Willing and able to discuss in detail at any time.

There sure was a lot hippy activity & press that nobody tried to censor.

Red scare and fbi tracking were wrong, but not nearly on this scale.

Makes poor whataboutism material.

You have been exposed with zero factual examples.

Keep supporting political censorship by democrats though.

By any means necessary, right?

Not when house is nearly all media, at urging of one political party.

Not when saying wrong thing gets people cancelled.

And in this case, it was the democrat's furry brownshirts, censoring in someone else's 'house'

You have ZERO examples to support what democrats have been doing.

Because there aren't any.

But you do sling more intelligent whataboutisms than most, so congratulations on that.

I 100% agree with you, if people can say whatever they like in their own home without punishment then that is fine, once you use someone elses platform then you have to abide by whatever rules they set.

But if someone is punished for saying something within their own castle then I will stand by them against any such tyranny, regardless of what it is they said.

The problem is that another "house" down the block is trying to silence what your house can and cannot do.

It is? That is interesting. Hardly ever have any issues on the site. I doubt this is some place that really holds a ton of interest with the powers that be. No real conspiracies get uncovered here or much of anything I can see or read for that matter...maybe years ago before and became an echo chamber. And politically fueled. reply to: carewemust

ATS has some good response teams, but yes, it gets its fair share of script kiddies and DDOS attacks.

In the hacker world, there's no real fame in saying you hacked some newbie's Wordpress blog. If, however, you hacked POLITICO or the US Navy or the British Parliament site, THAT is significant. So they go after anything with traffic.

Not really. I mean, they are trying to use social pressure to make you look bad for saying some things. The only way to deal with that is shrug and go on with your life. Change does happen...we all understand our grandfathers said things that were embarassing in public.

But you can still say what you want. You just can't do it on someone else's bandwidth. That is what this is all about....that social media censoring. Its their platform. Until a law says otherwise. And while i agree with you that its problematic...its more than simple politics. For example...Zucc can create algorithms to tell what an image looks like to have it automatically removed, and the poster put on a posting suspension. I've got some heretical memes that I can't post because Zucc's algorithms have determined it was a no no. But he can't create one to automatically remove posts that ask if you would accept 272.44 a week to post a sticker from Pepsi on your car. Why is that?

Your inability to post COVID memes is just the tip of the iceberg. And for now, its all legal, as its Zuccs house.

This is kind of a tough one. If i post on Facebook, from my home, is it my free speech?

What about a kid on Zoom that has a play gun? Is that free speech?

Internet's just a tad more complicated than that.

The castle (to use your metaphor) isn't an independent country. It's on land owned by another nation. So whoever's in the castle still has to abide by national laws. The castle might also be letting people homestead on their property -- people that the nation brands as outlaws. So the castle can get in trouble for aiding and abetting (which is why porn is generally hosted offshore rather than on American servers.)

So if you're on the Internet through a provider (AT&T or whomever) they can deny you access to certain sites (people sneak around this with anonymizers and similar). If you're using a US based webhost they can take your site down for violating the laws of the United States (or wherever you reside, which is why some things we find objectionable are hosted in other countries.)

One of the major dogs in this fight (and I remember this well because of peripheral involvement) was the Communications Decency Act of 1997

So this has been going on in the US since the Clinton administration and a bit before that, even, to Usenet and GEnie and AOL and Compuserv.
