I can't believe it's been 10 years already. I remember reading on here and refreshing threads all day long. It was almost like being there.

8.2 quake in Alaska Wednesday night. I hope everyone is ok...that magnitude of a quake is scarey; not fun at all.

I woke up early this morning put the news on and heard the earthquake news; wow! I live near the state of Alaska...so the quake could have easily affected the state I am in.

Seems like it was really deep. Apparently the Tsunami warnings have been called off.

Cheers

We had several small ones two weeks ago in northern NM. 3.5, 3.7 and 4.2. Some could feel it in Los Alamos where I am at.

Thanks for the heads-up!!

I would say an 8.2 is pretty significant, guess I was wrong.

A magnitude 8.2 earthquake struck 50 miles south of the Alaska Peninsula on July 28, 2021 at 10:15 pm local time (July 29, 2021 06:15 UTC). Seismic instruments indicate the earthquake originated at a depth of 20 miles (32.2 kilometers).

Perceived shaking for the quake was weak to light in Anchorage.

As of 2:51 am local time, 268 "Did You Feel It?" reports were submitted.

USGS scientists expect that this event will trigger aftershocks, but these will decrease in frequency over time. See the aftershock forecast for details.

I'm in Anchorage and I did not notice it until my wife told me about it being in the local news.

Remember Alaska is a huge state and where that was is not populated to speak of and a long way from any population of any size.

It's fortunate that no large tsunami came about.

Felt nothing and I live in a part of Anchorage that usually feels it when a fat man on the other side of the city falls on his ass.

Still....it was the biggest Earthquake in 50 years for the US and it probably is in the top 50 of largest Earthquakes in the world.

I guess depth and direction of movement were critical here.

Its location fortunately was far from any population. Yes, it's fortunate it was of a type that did not cause a huge tsunami. Had it been we'd have woken up to the news of the disastrous consequences.

Alaska Earthquake Center Tweet...

Alaska Earthquake Center on the 8.2

I used to work with a guy who was in the 1964 9.2, and he told me that the tops of the trees were slapping the ground at his home in Anchorage and the houses were bouncing off their foundations. It's interesting to note that most people did not even feel the one yesterday up here in Anchorage.
