Yes, intent and context matter.

The zoomed moments were MEANT to make you feel uncomfortable, and the audience was disgusted in the movie. That was the whole point.

That would seem a pretty significant bit of context that many seemed to have glossed over in their virtue signalling rush.

So if netflix gets found guilty in this matter, does that open up a possibility of people who viewed this garbage also being charged with a crime?
Or is it just fine to watch CP as long as its on a "reputable" channel/service?

I didn't watch it but saw the trailer due to all the controversy-and theres little doubt that this was all about underaged kids acting in a sexual manner. The trailer basically sold it as such.

You have to ask who was the target audience-If it was kids, that is pretty atrocious IMO.
If it was adults, possibly even moreso.

Or was it just a plan to generate controversy,in a "no publicity is bad publicity" kind of way?

Whatever it was-it was a bad move bby netflix IMO.

I cancelled Netflix the very day it was announced. I don’t care if they lock up everyone that saw the trailer. If you didn’t, you got bigger problems to worry about than the government.

Yes, intent and context matter. You could see a movie with a child in a bikini which has no sexual innuendo in it even though the child may be showing more "skin" than these girls. That would be completely harmless and no one would be calling for an indictment.

So Pretty Baby is okay? It wasn't meant to titillate.

So Epstein was innocent? I mean, if Cuties is okay, theres no point in prosecuting pedophiles.

Drop the devil advocate and pull the child binky out of your rectum. Any child exploitation is wrong, if you're going to bitch about people doing something against it, don't pull this holier than thou crap.

Theres a process to dealing with illegal activities, once we're done with Cuties, we'll be getting to your wet pedophilia reality shows next.

What an asinine comment. Call me when you can make a big person argument instead of a hyperbolic nonsensical one.

Playing devils advocate; what if the direction of this movie was to give a raw take on young girls who try to imitate what they see on social media. And to get viewers to question things.

What are the controversial scenes? Girls twerking?

Whose gonna be watching this besides girls and mothers?

I don't get the controversy...

I think child pageants are wrong, but calling this film pedophilia seems extreme.

There is a big difference between the director trying a unique take (but being too gritty) and a director who is a secret pedophile.

I wonder if the director had focus groups to get the reaction of the sexualized scenes. If so, i would then be curious about why the director kept in the scenes after (im assuming) people felt uncomfortable.

I thought the movie was incredible and brave. Problem is the far majority of people today are so clueless and ironically stupid that I only watched it because I saw it blowing up on every news page and by God is it an important film for anyone not so wordlessly effing oblivious to the message that rides above any others...

Do the filmmaking right and you can create that uncomfortable impression without actually using 11-year-olds though. That's the point.

You can make people think you lit a puppy on fire and burned it alive without actually having to do it.

Who am I kidding these are the days of Millennials and Gen Z. It's either hold their hands and give them the answers or expect total ignorance. The reason I was so glad watching it is because I felt someone finally gives a good gosh damn. And wont be shut up with threats of a nutcase system. What I got from the movie was that one person somewhere in a continent of ninnies and pushovers is showing daily life in the new Europe which is already so filthy and stained with...new issues...and it allows one to imagine what it will be like is a mere decade brought us to this.

Still not getting it? How about look at it as a depiction of the manner in which French or Spanish men, women, and boys treat the girls and compare it to the very different way every single look, word, interaction, anything goes when its...pretty princesses, flying purple people eaters, and unicorns who cross paths with the girls. Of course that's who I meant, who on earth else could i have meant to name there?

Yup, sue them into oblivion. For an alternative platform, try tubi. Blatant plug no doubt.

Regardless, don't give them any money unless you are comfortable with the exploitation of children. I don't even need to watch it to know that it's a garbage show. Toddlers and Tiaras was bad enough. Adults who try to live vicariously through their children are despicable.

It's really just softcore CP. Even though that's what Hollywood runs on, it's no excuse. If it were just a big joke, it'd still be unwatchable. Better off sticking to pro sports or the weather channel. Two shows that have a hard time lying to you. Pro wrestling isn't even that scripted. Their actors are much more likeable.

Just a couple more months worth of political intrigue to go.

Gets me thinking again about starting my own crossword puzzle league. Cue Weird Al being so white and nerdy.

I have seen the movie. There was one scene of female late teens or early 20's flashing her boob.
The movie itself is about a pre-teen girl trying to fit in. lead her doing stuff that her mom, grandmother and other adults didn't approved of, getting tease by the other kids.

At the end, she realize what she was doing was wrong, by watching the judges reaction during her dance routine. So quiet and went home. Her grand mom saw the way she was dress, was going to beat her ass. Her mom talked her grandmother out of beating her ass. Then her mom took her her her room and give her the talk, then left the room, leaving the pre-teen standing in her room. Next the pre-teen is walking down stairs wearing her normal cloths. At the end, she's jump roping with other girl who parents goes to the same church her mom and grandmother goes to.

True but that doesn't change the intent.

Besides, it would seem that the way it was shot and edited has actually brought the attention that they were after.

1. The content was gross. But if you want to make the argument that it's OK, then you go with the idea that it's all film and not real. Then you are back to the old standard of if you don't like it, don't watch it. Use the standard movie tricks of older actors where needed.

2. The reason this crosses the lines is because it's actually real. Instead of using the standard movie tricks to depict child exploitation, they actually exploit children. You have to debate at that point whether taking the actual step of exploiting actual 11-year-olds adds something to make the idea somehow worse. If it doesn't, then they are simply exploiting children when any of the standard move tricks would have done the same thing and achieved the same effect.

Let's try it this way -- imagine the Mexican standoff scene at the end of Reservoir Dogs. They all shoot each other, but imagine if Tarantino decided that in order to get some extra impact, to send the message, they actually needed to use live ammo and actually shoot each other. That's the level this film maker took it to.

She said, "Let's actually exploit the kids to show you how wrong it is to let your kids do this because they get exploited." At this point, you have to ask yourself if the exploitation needed to happen in order to send that message. And if you think you must see actual children getting exploited before this makes you say, "NOPE!" Then you need to examine how desensitized you are getting because the next step up for you could be snuff films.

I'm super liberal and I haven't heard anyone defend this movie.

Netflix defended their actions and the producers of the movie are very defensive.

And what are you super liberal with.

Are you liberal with your sexuality?

It would lead to disease.

Are you liberal with your money. And spending?
You would become in debt

Are you liberal with crime?

Give a second or 3rd chance, gamble with innocent lives?

Are you liberal with borders?

Everyone should be free to travel anywhere?

Crossing the line was the point.

It is funny that the post I replied to said a young girl can be shot in a bikini showing more than the girls in that dance scene but still be OK. Seems like that line isn't set firmly.

I'm gonna have to say that the Tarantino comparison is off. A sexualized dance and a hole in the chest is not apples to apples. Also, stunt people do take risks in order to get some extra impact.

Stunt people are also adults.

11-year-olds are not.

There is a reason why porn is allowed, but not child porn. Adults can consent. Children cannot.

I was just pointing out that risks are taken to bring certain scenes to the screen without it having to include people poking holes in each other.
