It's not for feelz though. It sounds like the movie contains lewd depictions of minors, which is very much the law's concern and will make a judgement on.

I saw the scene in question on YouTube, it's disturbing but I don't think it rises to the level of the Texas child porn law otherwise they need to prosecute the other shows mentioned.

I gotta agree with Augustus on this. Seems quite daft to point fingers down at one thing because it’s the hot topic while not giving a sh*t about it happening elsewhere.

How many people show up to those pageants with their own cameras? There could be any number of pervs out there filming close-ups of whatever they want. At the end of the day, I think there should simply be a line drawn to not allow the chances of that happening to a kid, whether it be in a studio-backed movie or a local pageant. Unfortunately, we live in a world where pervs will exploit any avenue they can to get their jollies off and if kids aren’t protected, someone will exploit that.

Sure, not all pageants or contestants are out there doing the same dance moves/dressing the same way, but hell, when my wife and I would watch AGT and the kid dancers would come on, we’d fast forward it because it’s just f*ckin’ weird to see kids under 10 doing these ultra-close/romantic dance moves, even fully clothed from limb to limb in loose fitting clothing.

If the door is open, someone is going to walk through it. Just shut the f*cking door.

Middle/Highschool cheerleaders twerking and performing other suggestive moves is allowed by sick minds, same goes for the kid pageants and every other means of exploiting kids for sexual reasons. The school staff that allow it are bad enough but the parents are the worst because they see nothing wrong with it. That type of behavior can and does affect these girls for life. Some more than others but anyone that has been with someone that was abused in any way as a child knows what can happen. It's all abuse and it's based on beauty and sexuality and that makes it disgusting.

I honestly hope that forcing a child to lose their innocence like that guarantees the offender a special place in hell.

I would guess if we documented such things over time too -- child pageants and dance competitions -- you could see the overall descent and degradation into what we have today. It would be a fine depiction of the overall coarsening and lowering of general culture where both parents and judges not only think this is what kids should do to win (be overly sexual) but encourage it.

So, only got through 2 pages, but really? Cuties is okay because child exploitation is already happening?

So I can't be disgusted by Cuties because I didn't even know a show called Dance Moms existed? Frankly, I'm more concerned about the fact that people know so much about it but never said anything until Cuties started taking heat. Kinda sets off some red flags.

But no, Cuties should get a pass because its statistically impossible for people to be against the movie AND these child beauty pageants.

It's disgusting, child being exploited, Hollywood and co. normalizing pedophilia and the whataboutism apologists demeaning any successful attempts to fix these issues.

Child beauty pageants need to be eliminated. Child pornography needs to be eliminated. Child actors should never be allowed to play roles in TV-MA and etc. shows and movies.

The film is from France, Hollywood is the one cranking out the dance shows for nearly a decade that hasn't raised any Texan eyebrows. Selective outrage.

You’re spot on with that. I was abused physically, verbally, sexually and mentally to the point of being hospitalized on more than one occasion before I was 8 years old. When child abuse is discussed I generally need to talk myself down before I can form any response that doesn’t begin and end with “kill the f*ckers”.

Yup, indicted by a "grand jury" of blue skinned, uncle knowin' banjo players... I bet Netflix is a'skeered.

Well....the local prost-a-tot pageants don't have children humping the floor or full up-close crotch shots or children posting nude pictures online. So yeah...not the same thing. But for what it's worth, I had the misfortune of having to judge a child beauty pageant ONE TIME. It was very uncomfortable and disturbing for me to see kids dressed up like adult women with more make-up than Tammy Fae Baker. No one was dressed like a stripper.

I'd tell you to watch the videos that Sookie posted about those dance competitions but I'm not about to qualify them.

When this story first broke in early Sept, there were several screenshots that journalists had captured from the movie that showed close-up shots of the girls groins and buttocks...along with pictures and video of the girls undulating on the floor in a sexual manner, etc. Many of these photos have since been scrubbed from search engines and even many of the initial articles that brought them forward....likely because of concerns (rightfully so) of pushing child pornography.

As for saying that the movie should get a pass because some dance competition received a pass is a strawman. First of all, a dance competition isn't published on a global platform around an alleged "message" about child exploitation. You need to look at this movie from a totality of intent. The INTENT was to sexualize the children. A dance competition does not have INTENT to sexualize children. Second, if there WAS a dance competition that WAS intended to sexualize children or pushed child "soft porn," then it should also be prosecuted just as Netflix is being prosecuted.

Just so, and usually in a film of this nature, they would get over-age actors to stand in for the child actors on the sexually explicit stuff, but in this case, everything you see is 11-year-olds doing it.

I would suspect that what shielded shows like Dance Moms and Toddlers and Tiaras to some degree is their status as reality TV. To a certain extent the cameras are documenting what's already taking place, but in this case the film is entirely staged, start to finish.

There’s an interesting thing going on in this thread right now-

The director of Cuties, as Sookie quoted, wanted to bring child exploitation to light with the movie. As a result of that, posters in this thread who are adamant that Cuties is vile and didn’t need to be made are now finding out about other pageant shows that have been airing for years without a word said about them.

Interesting crux of a situation. Had the movie not been made and caused the ruckus it has, would these other shows continue to fly under the radar? Will there be something done about these shows now that Cuties has been made and seen?

(And because people like to jump to conclusions here; I have not and will not watch the movie. I’ve had enough abuse in my own life that I certainly don’t need to see more of it to know it exists or how well it flies under the radar)

Pageants and dance like that are things we know exist.

It's been an ongoing thing in parent circles that if your kid wants to dance, you have to be careful what studio you choose because they may wind up in a place like the one in Dance Moms. Some parents don't see the big deal, but for a lot of parents it's a tough thing to weed those places out and getting harder.

I see, the 'message' matters. Then you should be even more upset then by the TV shows as it's kids prancing around for the sake of exposure, nothing else.

Once again, there are no degrees in exploitation.

It’s always the same group of people that defend disgusting practices such as this with “whataboutisms”.

Their logic appears be be that if something else bad is happening then why condemn the issue being discussed?

But this is only selective. Issues that that hate don’t get the same pass.

I could imagine. Not a day goes by where I’m not thankful for deciding not to have kids. In fact, each day that passes I’m generally MORE thankful that I’m not having kids.

Really, the idea that parents actually have to weed out the bad ones is just a bummer. I don’t know if it’s society getting worse or we’re just seeing more cases of disgusting behavior because we’re more connected or the population is continuously growing, but man....I sure do miss the 90’s when things didn’t seem as bad as they are now.

Just an aside, but aren't ALL chaps "assless"?
