perhaps this crisis will persuade Americans to accept "socialised medicine".

That would be as bad or worse than the Chinese virus.

The current situation has certainly exposed the shortcomings of the current system

And how many of those countries also have higher tax rates + VAT taxes resulting in much less take home pay for the citizen. Sure you don't pay at the point of service because you constantly pay with everything you buy and at every tax time.

You also pay in terms of wait times for services you need as well.

Your basic care is "free" but your emergency care as in cancer care and other services where time is of necessity is not as good.

There are trade-offs being made. No one ever wants to discuss those but very much do exist. As a migraine suffered, I am acutely aware of the shortfalls of socialized care where my own personal conditions is concerned. And I would prefer to stay where I am.

It's exposing every system.

Italy and China are doing none too well, and they have socialized systems.

Here’s the rankings.

Link

Colombia and Chile both have better healthcare than America. In fact we’re at #37 worldwide.

North Africa has better healthcare than America.

They base their rankings on things other than outcomes. Qualitative measures such as equity and other things that can't really be substantiated.

If you are on you are in need of serious healthcare, getting treatment in the US is far better in terms of outcome.

Sure, if you want to complain about getting a free physical in some systems is better, then fine. However, the truly sick know who has the best healthcare... the US.

Another question I have is that the article says the urgent care advised the parent to take the boy to an ER.

It's an urgent care, they're not set up to do much more than deal with minor illnesses.

Even if the parents had an insurance card, it's highly possible they may have advised the same.

I recall one Friday afternoon after Christmas when I sprained the heck out of my ankle getting ready to leave, and we were searching high and low for a quick means of getting treatment before leaving town. Even with insurance, I was turned away from several urgent cares because they didn't have the means of performing an x-ray to make sure my ankle wasn't broken and there was nothing they could do without knowing that for sure.

They one and all advised me to go to the ER which is where I indeed ended up because it was the only means of quickly obtaining an x-ray.

But still, we have known many people uninsured go to the ER for one reason or another. Never have they been turned away.

That may be so have have you / she ever known a pandemic the scale of this one and the pressure it puts on a health service.

True that, very good point.

The answer is no.

Urgent care is not Emergency care. You can not be turned away from an ED, they can't even ask for insurance. Urgent care could not provide the type of care this person needed.

The US has a lower infection rate and death rate than most of the socialized medicine countries. France, which many consider the pinnacle of a more socialized system has a death rate 5x higher than the US.

And what do they base their metrics on? Countries with better access but worse outcomes will rank higher. If America was not subsidizing the healthcare of the entire world by funding the majority of research that everyone else benefits from maybe our access would be higher and those stupid rankings would be closer to reality.
