No one should ever die from lack of insurance in a first world country.

I know someone in a 'third world' country who was recently in an accident at night and received care and treatment at a hospital right away. In a small town, lacking many necessities.

Ironic, isn't it? Especially when the 'third world' is a major contributor to the catastrophic statistic of 20,000 children in the world dying DAILY from poverty, irrespective of our current virus or any previous pandemic.

20,000 dead children each day... something that is actually impossible to contemplate lest we go insane. So we ignore it, brush it under the carpet, and have done so for 40 years save for a couple of pop concerts.

Perspective can be a surreal activity.

Urgent Care turned me away because I had a copy of my insurance card, not the original. Slumped to my car and drove myself to the ER. Broken rib and a collapsed lung. F you urgent care, I hope you die in a fire.

The pictures of the newborn wards in Venezuela where newborns are put into cardboard boxes really highlights how behind the times the US is compared to the free health care of South America.

Urgent care is not an ER.

The urgent care facilities around here deal with sniffles and splinters. Stuff you need to see a doctor for, but are hardly emergencies. They cater to people who don't have time to see their primary physician. They aren't designed to deal with just anyone who walks in off the street and certainly not subsidized like a hospital.

Cardboard boxes are sustainable and green. The metal plastic incubators with oxygen, computers, and EKGs are wasteful.

This is basically a head to head medical test

Social medicine vs American Medicine system

Let’s see what wins. If less people die in America why would we want to switch to an inferior system. Why would everyone else want to keep an inferior system?

Yes, I realize this now. You're right. I was stupid to go in there. The fact they wouldn't give me the time of day is what pissed me off.

Seriously, if this boy was so poor, why wasn't he on the California CHiP program? They say he's a teen, so he would likely be under 19. If his parents didn't get him enrolled, then that's on them and not the fault of any clinic.

The county health department included him in the coronavirus death toll, then backtracked The teen died on March 18. Six days later, on March 23, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health attributed the death to the coronavirus, which had made him the first known teenager to die from COVID-19 in the US. His father is also suspected of having the virus, according to the Los Angeles Times. But later that day, the county's department of health said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would reevaluate the case, saying "there may be an alternate explanation for this fatality." "The juvenile fatality that the Los Angeles County Department Public Health reported earlier today will require further evaluation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention," the county said in a statement. "Though early tests indicated a positive result for COVID-19, the case is complex, and there may be an alternate explanation for this fatality. Patient privacy prevents our offering further details at this time." On Wednesday, Barbara Ferrer, the county public-health director, removed the boy from the death toll and said there were "extenuating circumstances that pointed to an alternative diagnosis," according to The Mercury News.
so seems it was something else or they are trying really hard to not add this one death to the corona death toll.......

Here’s the rankings.

Colombia and Chile both have better healthcare than America. In fact we’re at #37 worldwide.

perhaps this crisis will persuade Americans to accept "socialised medicine".

Do you mean more effective, universal coverage which is cheaper for the citizen? I think some Americans are so obsessed with the work "socialised" that they are blinded. No other country with good universal healthcare calls it "socialised".

To the OP. There are many before him who have died because the profit motive comes before healthcare.

But still, we have known many people uninsured go to the ER for one reason or another. Never have they been turned away.

That may be so have have you / she ever known a pandemic the scale of this one and the pressure it puts on a health service.

The story is true but cause of death is unclear.

However, Los Angeles’ County Department of Public Health later said the teen’s death was taken off a list of deaths associated with Covid-19 in the area. The department said the CDC would complete an investigation into the teen’s death. It remained unclear what symptoms he may have been experiencing prior to his death.
