That's what it looks like reading the update. The may have clipped some trees first, but it doesn't show any indication of mechanical problems, or a blade strike, and a witness saw them go into a left turn just before impact, and everything appeared normal.

Any indication of Kobe being the pilot at the time?

They'll never know. The aircraft wasn't equipped with recorders, and wasn't required to be.

If you had to guess?

Based on what I've read the pilot was no novice....this appears to be a novice mistake that the primary pilot couldn't recover from.

He may not have been a novice, but that doesn't mean much. Any number of highly experienced pilots have been caught in this situation with the same results. If he didn't regularly fly in instrument conditions, his skills and reactions will have gotten rusty.
