Venezuela wins seat on UN Human Rights Council

A UN General Assembly meeting in Geneva saw the Latin American country elected to one of 14 new seats on the 47-member body.
Nicolás Maduro's government hailed it as an "important achievement".

His administration is accused of jailing, torturing and arbitrarily arresting opposition figures.
More than 50 countries no longer recognise Mr Maduro as the country's legitimate leader.

Wasn't it just a couple of months ago that Maduro objected to the UN Human Rights Council's plans to go there and look into the Venezuela government's human rights abuses? And today, as of Tuesday, Venezuela sits on the UNHRC.

The socialist country has been dogged by malnutrition, disease and violence, as well as accusations that the government is engaged in money laundering and supporting terrorism. In his address to the U.N. General Assembly last month, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that four million people have fled the country, which he called "one of the largest displacements in the world."

This just confirms the justification for the United States' departure last year of that farce of a council.

I have been wanting the U.S. out of the U.N. since the ‘80s. It is a bigger threat to our sovereignty than any nation state.

WTH does the UN think human rights are supposed to entail?

Nothing new here, I am sure Saudi Arabia has a seat on women's rights as well. The outfit has been a sham since day one and will always be. Move it to Belgium or something where people still believe that its somehow going to further humanity.

Maybe the UN is using some kind of reverse psychology. If we give Venezuela a seat on the Human Rights Council, maybe they'll see the error of their ways....Nah. More than likely, the seat was bought.

It’s interesting that Maxime Bernier, leader for the newly established People’s Party of Canada , was the only leader of a party in this election that said he would pull Canada out of the useless UN.

ETA: To my knowledge anyhow.. if anyone has facts to correct me, please do so... but I’m sure he’s the only party leader advocating for pulling out of UN

Do you have any idea how many people in this country would *never* go for it?

Do you know how many people have guns in this country?
