I remember mucho humorous confusion when as a young teenager there was an American musical on telly with some old guy merrily singing "smack her on the fanny".
I can still remember thinking "OMG, did he just say that? CAN he say that?". I had no idea back then that fanny means bum in America, deviates!!

Maybe you're thinking of communism? Socialism still means the same thing it always has.

Granted it does go on to say that one interpretation(out of several)of " social ownership" can be "state ownership" but it is hardly the sole definition.
It seems the Wall Street, vulture capitalist, CFR oligarchs etc agenda to make socialism(ownership and means of production is maintained in the hands of the people being the most accurate definition IMO)a dirty word has worked perfectly on many ATS members.
The meaning of a term doesn't change just because some opponents believe something erroneously.
Its intellectually corrupt to take just one obscure subdefinition and use it as the single main definition of a term just because it suits some shadowy groups capitalist/anti independent/empowered worker agenda(personally I'm fine with capitalism, like any doctrine its how its applied that matters).
Corrupt leaders will work out how to manipulate and use any political system for personal gain, sometimes leaving a toxic, lasting legacy that is loaded with negative baggage.
Remember China is a strict Communist/capitalist country and they're doing just fine economically and socially.
A country with that many people would totally need a tight, regimented system in place to keep entropy and chaos in check.
