What is this strange object that washed ashore on Seabrook Island?

I came across this on RSOE, where it has been classified as an 'Event into space'. The Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network first published the photo on their Facebook page after they found the object washed upon the shore of Seabrook Island on Thursday.

Sorry but for some reason I am unable to upload the pic. I can't see that this has been posted here yet.. Anyone have any idea what it could be?

Don't lick it.

Part of a rig. As it's made of foam, it could be the interior of a buoy.

A UFO it is not.

Yeah a buoy might fit. Odd it’s lost it’s whole external skin and stayed mostly intact.

Hi No Fear, good thanks! Yeah I saw someone commenting about it being the nose from Challenger lol.

All this crap floating about in our oceans gets me down.

my opinion - it looks like a float - lost from a dredge // pollution control system

it would of course help if people published better pics

Interesting it has no sea life growing on it, hasn't been in the water long

That's a good shout Raggedyman - if this was some kind of bouy you'd think it would have some kind of barnacles or something growing on it.... I'm also wondering why RSOE categorised it as an 'Event into Space' although I have found them to be somewhat melodramatic in their descriptions!

My guess would be a flotation device for something like a drilling platform .

Perhaps it’s debris from the Wallops Flight Facility on the Virginia coast.

As already pointed out it is part of a pipeline or dredge float.
