They're two different designs doing the same thing. One is the design of the aircraft as it will probably look, the second is an engineering study of design.

I think the second image is actually a subvolume of the first image, the volume of space between the top of the lower segment, the interconnect and a bit of the upper wing.

All afterburning engines do. They're formed in supersonic airflow out the exhaust (yes it's more complicated, but that works well enough).
