They're two different designs doing the same thing. One is the design of the aircraft as it will probably look, the second is an engineering study of design.

I think the second image is actually a subvolume of the first image, the volume of space between the top of the lower segment, the interconnect and a bit of the upper wing.

All afterburning engines do. They're formed in supersonic airflow out the exhaust (yes it's more complicated, but that works well enough).

As one senior aerospace engineer once told me "Talk is cheap and easy. Hypersonic passenger planes that can actually be profitable for manufacturers and operators are anything but."
