I think a lot of US commentators aren't bigots, but they get a very weird idea of the UK from TV news. Remember that debacle when Fox News claimed Birmingham was a closed city under Sharia law? That sort of thing goes on so much that it's not a wonder some Americans think odd things about what happens here. Perhaps (and I'm not being snide here) if more Americans travelled abroad, they'd get a more representative impression of what goes on.

A very good point. I remember the Birmingham debacle, mostly because I laughed so hard that I cried. It was the silliest thing I'd ever heard - but then I realised that the Fox News presenters were so badly educated about life outside their tiny bubble that they didn't frown and then point out that what that 'expert' was saying was total bovine excrement.
