Maybe it was malfunctioning?

Since I wasn't there, and there's no other record than the story, who am I to say that the guy was wrong about what he saw? But from the description, the entire encounter barely lasted a minute, and it would certainly be easy for him to have misidentified something mundane, or to have been the victim of a prank.

It's interesting, but it doesn't pass the shrug test.
