Russian Su-27 warns off NATO F-16 trying to approach defense minister’s plane over Baltic

A NATO F-16 fighter jet has tried to approach the Russian defense minister’s plane above the neutral waters of the Baltic Sea. The plane was warded off by a Russian Su-27 escorting the minister’s aircraft, according to journalists who were on board.

Russian plane was en route to the city of Kaliningrad, a western Russian exclave between Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic Sea, where Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu is scheduled to discuss security issues with defense officials on Wednesday.

While one NATO aircraft tried to approach the Russian airplane, a Russian Su-27 fighter jet got in its way and tilted its wings, apparently showing its arms, according to RIA Novosti and TASS journalists who were on board. The F-16 then flew away. www.rt.com...

During the COld War, the rivals Soviet Union and USA/NATO used to invite each other's dignitaries on red carpets. Not to intercept their planes.

IMO we are only steps from WW3. The war already started psychologically, as WW1 and WW2 de facto started long before the actual shooting.

Are you sure they were over neutral waters? This sounds suspiciously like the state controlled media trying to stir up tension. Why?

ETA: Why was an Su-27 even present? That may have been what attracted the NATO pilot's attention, not the passenger plane. Do Russian officials always travel with a fighter escort?

My hunch is that Russia is trying to create the impression that there is tension between Russia and President Trump to add further smoke to the controversies surrounding him. Expect Russian trolls to claim that the jet was under orders from the "Deep State."

Did NATO commanders understand that in past time to kill such person was considered Casus Belli, cause of war?

After Syria incident and Russian grave warning of NATO planes, now comes THAT. It is not coincidence, it is sought confrontation. It has nothing to do with the erratic character of Trump or the Russian internet trolls. It is premeditated action. WW3 is already a fact in the prelude of preparation and psychological testing. Remember how WW2 started. It didn't come at a big surprise either.

some internet trolls use to post Flying radar with data of who is inside, sometimes dignitaries...and that is on internet. How much more of the US /NATO intelligence...And why to try to approach a "civilian plane" then? It wouldn;t happen if NATO didn't WANT it happen. This is a provocation. Bigger one would be only if they did the same with the plane of Putin.

Again, if it was not Shoigu's plane but James Mattis's plane next to the US airspace with approaching Russian fighter, what would be the reaction of Washington?

But why was he flying over the Baltic? That would be a detour. If he were flying from Moscow to Kaliningorod, he would have filed a flight plan with Lithuanian aviation authorities. Was he coming from Finland? What was he doing there?

Used to do this all the time in 70's, 80's, 90's. As long as we make arrangements with Russia to prevent either side from reacting to conventional conflict where one side or the other commits a conventional attack on the other that no nuclear weapons or escalation outside immediate conflict area should occur, we will all be ok.

For instance, if Russia downs a US JSTARS and USA reacts by destroying every airfield, Russian missile system and aircraft in Syria. Russia could respond but only in Syrian area. For instance it would not be allowable for Russia to attack a US target in the Gulf of Mexico as a response to a regional conflict and vice versus.

It is going to happen either in Syria, Korea or Iran at some point and we need to make agreements to not let any regional conflict turn into a world wide war and response to prevent escalation to extinction events.

if we are lucky, Putin and his team may decide the diplomacy has several more days or weeks to be given a chance...

if not, there are enough causes , the latest one in Syria, where the flashpoint could be found. Putin already warned, the war will take less than 30 minutes
