Our cottage is a log cabin overlooking the Au Sable river in the Huron National Forest in Mio Michigan. One overlook stretches out for nearly 10-15 miles below the cliff and we can see the winding river below.
At times, especially at night...we can hear music, talking, laughing and some strange sounds as well. We determined that they were coming from along the river-possibly 4-5 miles downstream...or upstream that can echo for miles and miles, and in reality are nowhere near our location. It can be quite eerie at times.
The human brain as well, takes sounds it hears randomly at times and assimilates what it hears into what it thinks it is. In reality, its just echos from a long way away. But...that doesnt explain the more unsettling ones sounding like whispers and at times screams in the far far distance.
I think it can be attributed to the stillness of the forest at night...and even so, paranormally speaking...I think the mind can determine/formulate ancient sounds of Native Americans that imprinted on the forest hundreds of years ago...I believe that.
1:30-4:30 a.m. are good times to hear these before the morning birds begin singing.
...I have some personal history with this location. I was on a school trip to Plymouth and Carver, MA during my senior year in high school in May 1976. A few of us decided to drive out to the park one evening. Frankly, it is one of the eeriest places I have ever been. I could just feel the spirit activity everywhere I turned. In fact, it was so bad I had to leave earlier than the group...there was a true bad vibration in the area. This was a year before the Ruth Masters murder. Myles Standish was a pilgrim who came to Plymouth on the Mayflower in 1620. He was known for building a fort in Plymouth, leading the attacks on the Native Americans, and starting trading with various tribes. He kept Plymouth in defense and enforced the law throughout the colony. He went on trips back to England to trade goods to bring back to Plymouth. Some time in the 1630s, he founded Duxbury, a town not far from Plymouth. The haunting in Myles Standish State Forest includes an old abandoned mental hospital that is located somewhere deep in the forest. In another part of the woods lies a lot where murders took place in the 1970s. Not a lot is said about the abandoned hospital; as for the murders, on May 14, 1977, according to the Plymouth Police Department records, a man murdered Ruth Masters (née Ruth Rydberg) while she was riding her bike alone on an isolated trail in the park. Wayne Masters and his wife Ruth were at Myles Standish State Forest, in Plymouth Mass., for a day of bicycle riding. While riding alone, on an isolated trail, Ruth Masters was attacked by Eric H. Anderson and killed. Ruth Master was knocked unconsious with a rifle, her throat was cut and her body was mutilated. The case went cold and remained unsolved.

Ive been a "sensitive" my whole life (and part Cherokee)...and I really believe events in places, homes, areas..."imprints" or records on the surroundings...and certain people for years to come....can "pickup" these imprints.
Tragedies, suicides, eventful situations both positive and negative...cans affect the walls, trees and surroundings only to be "played back" in time to certain people.

Or maybe somebody was just playing the flute.

Hi!
Once many years ago I heard a flute playing in the wee hours as well. I do believe it was 3 am also but can't remember for sure. I wasn't camping but heard this ethereal 'floating' music outside my window! At the time there were no houses around us and we were pretty secluded. I had been reading a lot about portals and elven things so naturally assumed it was my mind playing tricks on me, but then I heard it a 2nd night! I went outside both nights (probably a dumb move) but never saw or heard anything else. It was really beautiful and I can see how someone may be entranced into wandering into a fairy realm.

I was asleep in a forest beside Loch Ness, Scotland. It was the middle of the day, I'd been driving all night. As I awoke I became aware of the faint sound of a flute. At first I wasn't sure if I was imagining it. The sound came and went, sometimes louder, sometimes quieter. I listened for a while then got up and walked down towards the music.
As I got closer it became obvious this was real, short bursts of melody followed by silence them more melody.
I entered a clearing beside the road that follows the edge of the loch. There was a man there holding a flute. I laughingly said "I thought it was fairy music. It sounds surreal through the trees".
He looked annoyed and said, "I come here to practice where nobody can hear me".
But I wouldn't rule out a ghost memory of the past or some such thing in your case.

Went camping for a couple days in a state forest in my area,
The weather was beautiful, had a great site, no neighbors right next to us.
Saw a couple of shooting stars.
Only strange thing was being awoken at about 3:00 to sounds like someone was playing a flute. I heard it twice and thought I must be dreaming. The third time I sat straight up, reached for my weapon, and called out to my sister in the next tent. She didn't wake up. Needless to say I layed in silence for what seemed like an eternity until I convinced myself that some kid must have brought a recorder and decided to play it.
The music was beautiful, and eery at the same time.
I'm home now and exhausted.
Has anybody experienced anything like this while camping?

What you have experienced is deep meditation, and hearing the higher realms song. I have heard this many times and it never ceases to amaze me.
Congrats to your conscious glimpse into the higher vibrational state. More and more people will be experiencing these phenomena as they use senses beyond the 5 physical ones.
