So, while everyone is looking at Eastern Europe and wondering if Nato Expansion will kick off or whether Putin will roll the dice again in the Ukraine, China and the Philippines, Taiwan etc. are shaping up to grab the oil and other resources around the Spratley Islands.

If you look on a map, Chinas claim is ridiculous, but they aren't acknowledging the ruling and one has to wonder what the next step will be.
As big as they are? Facing Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines and Taiwan all at once will not be an easy thing.

I would not say untouchable. If China rejects the ruling that it agreed to abide by when it became a member of UNCLOS then China is holding the match to the keg. Nations with claims would e able to defend themselves militarily and that would isolate China on the world stage.

Actually, Putin's obsession with NATO may cost Russia land in Asia. There are some potentially strategic islands Japan has claims on, and Siberia is becoming culturally Chinese.

Chinese can't really do anything as of right now, They are at least 10-15 years behind the US Navy if it comes to a confrontation.

Well, China will ignore the ruling even though the international tribunal has found that China's claims to the whole South China Sea or spurious. Only a complete moron would give the Chinese claim any credence.

China knows this, but they have been manipulating domestic opinion through censorship and press control for so long, the average Chinese thinks it's all legitimate.

The bullying tactic by China are a worrying indicator to all Chinese neighbours. It is especially worrying that China are militarising the Sea by building artificial islands over other countries claims. Not to mention the environmental damage China are causing, they are setting themselves up to evict other claimants using force and intimidation.

This is one reason why they are so keen to reaffirm alliances wit the US.

Look at the long game here. Who wins? China probably won't win if all they do is alienate and act belligerently to their neighbours. It seems to me that China are digging themselves a grave by their antagonistic actions.

Russia will not help China in South China sea, they have other things to worry about. US Navy along with its Carriers have been roaming in South China sea and the Islands despite protests from Beijing.

IF you saw the Hague convention, only 8 nations supported China and 40 nations opposed the Chinese. All those 8 Are African Nations. Chinese Navy will be outnumbered and outgunned by surrounding Navies. Even India has interests in South China sea along with Vietnam and has been arming Vietnam against China.

Besides, I highly doubt the capabilities of the Chinese Navy as compared to US Navy, You have to understand US Navy has far far more operational experience and its tech is far beyond what the Chinese have right now. IF you are talking about US air force and Army, i would agree Chinese could be a match, but US Navy is far Superior to any navy out there.

what that means is the original designs are far superior to the knock offs. plus there may be have been a plan to let that phase of a design slip into their hands so that a design flaw would exist and can be exploited during a conflict.

I really think that even without the US this conflict would be a tough one for China.
As for the undetectable subs, they are just diesel electric boats. They can only run silent for so long.
