www.abc.net.au...

A Florida neighbourhood watchman has sold the gun he used to kill unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin for $US250,000 ($346,000), auctioneers say.

In announcing the sale, Mr Zimmerman had said that a portion of the proceeds would serve to "fight BLM (Black Lives Matter) violence against law enforcement officer".
I personally find it difficult to comprehend why a person would want this murder gun let alone pay $US250,000 for. What will the winning bidder DO with this weapon, it should have been destroyed to not make it a "prized trophy"that it appears to be now. Is this an Americian fad or what am i missing?

I was a bit skeptical when I saw your story, mostly due to the fact that his auction was being trolled.

But this may be true.

Looks like he was about to accept $150k and then got another of of $250k...

TMZ said that it sold for $120k:

www.tmz.com...

The Daytona News Journal says he turned down $150k:

KTNV says that it sold for $250k...

It's disgusting. Zimmerman is disgusting. I hope the buyer finds something to do with it that wii help someone.

This is on my mantle to this day. When it happened, my daughter was close to Trayvon's age. It was the first is a rash of police shooting children. Well, in this case, not even police. Some guy who was told BY the police to STOP following. I listen to the 911 recordings and still just can't fathom. And a woman's child is dead.

I haven't gotten over it, I never will.

See kids! Crime does pay.

Also, how does a piece of evidence from a murder trial make its way online for sale?
What protocols are in place for the withholding of evidence after a decision has been handed down in a murder trial?
How are criminal cases revisited at a later date if it's the norm to do away with evidence in this manner?

Let this pathetic excuse for a human being have his little moment. It won't last long and the money will not make him any more relevant or happy than his miserable ass is right now.

Plus... because he's addicted to trying to stay infamous, he continues seeking out high risk behaviors - particularly with law enforcement. It won't take long before karma gives him his due.

The article I read about a week ago, said the weapon was released to Zimmerman. He tried 1 auction, it was both pulled down and had hoax bids. Then he found another company to auction it.

Zimmerman had his trial and was found innocent so he is entitled to have his property returned to him after the trial. They also can not retry him for the same crime twice (Double Jeopardy here) so releasing it wouldn't have any ramifications in the future.

On the off chance that one would then face a civil trial (brought by the family for a monetary settlement), the forensic evidence that was used in the first trial, would be admitted into the civil trial, so there would still be no need for the actual weapon to come into play again. The data collected from it originally would already be available.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your feedback on this. If that be the case (that the weapon is returned to an individual found not guilty) then I suppose he is free to do with it what he pleases. I am just a little surprised that such evidence would be returned to private use irrespective of the verdict handed down, but like you said, the forensics and other data initially collected would suffice.

Out of interest, what would have happened to the ownership of his weapon had the verdict been guilty?

If he had been found guilty, he would not have gotten his property back. It would have remained in police custody or been destroyed by the state. I am not sure if they would sell this particular gun, but they can and do sell things like get away vehicles, and the like.

They would have also retained the weapon even if he was innocent had it been modified in any illegal way, had he been carrying concealed without a license, he was a convicted felon prior, or if he could not prove legitimate ownership.

Forfeiture laws.

ETA - This is how I understand them as an average citizen.

Agreed. Even if I had 100% honestly shot and killed someone with the knowledge that it was the only way I could live... I don't think I would ever want to lay eyes on the gun I used to do it again. I would think that most normal folks would be haunted by something like that even if it wasn't really a choice but something one had to do. Why would you want to keep a keepsake from it? I would probably be wishing that everything and every memory of that moment would disappear forever.

Somewhere in his ultra-luxurious manor there now sits a very, very rich white man, lovingly stroking his new gun, which "killed one of THEM".

Because there are enough people with questionable morale, and there is no law against them being part of the 1%.

Are we happy with that?

Sounds like this guy have found a legal way to earn money killing teens! This sickening me beyond belief

If this where to happen in my country, i would like to believe that the people would be enraged by this, and would demand justice, i would certainly be on the streets!

How can this sort of thing happen, in a civilized world?

That gun is viewed as a trophy and it's disgusting.

The money used is going to go to helping cops fight Black Lives Matter? 71% of the cops killed this year have been killed by white men.
