From the Washington Post. I submit this for your viewing pleasure. The subject. Godwins Law. See here in American politics the left and right just loves to call each other NAZI. As the writer points out. Not because were right, Its because wethink we're superior to someone else.

First, let me get this Donal Trump issue out of the way. If you're thoughtful about it and show some real awareness of history,go ahead and refer to Hitler or Nazis when you talk about Trump, or any other politician.

On to Godwins Law:

A term that originated on Usenet, Godwin's Law states that as an on line argument grows longer and more heated, it becomes increasingly likely that somebody will bring up Adolf Hitler or the Nazis. When such an event occurs, the person guilty of invoking Godwin's Law has effectively forfieted the argument.

Godwin's Law.

Lets begin with the original shall we ?

The original. The one. The Only. Mr. Nazi.

Then we move on to wait what ?

How can this guy be a nazi ? Like wasn't that spot already taken ?

Moving on to wait WHAT ?

How can this guy be a nazi? Another one ?

Moving on to wait WHAT AGAIN ?

Now your telling me that guy is a NAZI ?

Moving on to wait back right up THIS IS A NAZI ?

Where are they all coming from ?

Which one is a NAZI ? They can't ALL be nazi's right ?

Stop confusing me people. I mean seriously.

And yep I am just as guilty of Godwin's Law as most politico's are.

As the saying goes, 'When in Rome'.

I don't think we can say that any one politician is a Nazi or even close. But we can point-out tactics and rhetoric that is similar to those used by Nazis.

There is no mistake that certain politicians and media outlets deserve the comparison and what they are doing is dangerous.

*Rises* I'm a Nazi. *Looks around* Oh we're not doing that..? We're not, oh, ok, never mind then.
It's a common insult. Well, not as common as others, but it's there.

THAT is the problem with American politics. "HE DID IT" blah, blah and then NO ONE takes responsibility for any deficiency and the system perpetuates. It's easy to see from the outside.

Did the Nazi's want smaller government or bigger government?

Did the Nazi's push for more individual freedoms and liberties, or less?

Then ask yourself what candidates espouse those attributes.

It's true you know. Global warming may be solved (smaller population and so smaller gas emissions) and um....I'm not sure. There would be new problems. Not sure what to say.

I didn't say it was. I inferred from your OP that it was about American politics. You're damn right about Harper though.

Saying something like that is not beneficial because we could play the same game with the "other side".

The Nazis were hell bent on "sterilizing" their country of those they found to be unsavory. That led to the holocaust.

Ask yourself, which party has candidates that wish to persecute people they find "unsavory".

"American politics," huh? Dude, Google "Stephen Harper nazi" and notice that this is by no means an America-centric problem. It's a western world issue.

It's actually really easy to explain, too. What is the largest smear on modern human history? Nazi Germany. Thus, if you want to end constructive discussion by putting someone into full backpeddal defensive mode, call them a Nazi in the media. Constructive discussion stymied, ridiculous accusation deflectors engaged.

Bottom line: unless your name is Pol Pot, Hideki Tojo, Josef Stalin, or Mao Zedong, your name does not belong anywhere near any rational comparison or accusation of being akin to Adolph Hitler. Period.

All governments are basically the same. It is in their METHOD to govern, that differs.

Precisely, it is the consistency with national socialist ideology and, potentially, methods that are the true attributes worthy of comparison.

Do you think it's unfair to point-out people that use propaganda techniques similar to that of the Nazis?

Will the real slim nazi please stand up??

It's all deflection. Nazi is used like racist or bigot. It's used to shut conversation down right then and there. Whether it's used to paint someone so badly that no one wants to be associated with them, or it's used to shut up unpopular opinions... it is in the end always used to shut down communication and it works for the most part.

Once someone makes that comparison in most any conversation I've had/am having I just walk away. You can't argue/debate/conversate with folks like that. Hyperbole and all that junk...
