Machine: I’m not in the mood for a philosophical debate.

Researchers have shown that machines are inching closer to self-learning, and perhaps even copping a little attitude.

Over at Google GOOGL -1.55%, a computer program using a database of movie scripts was asked again and again by researchers to define morality. It struggles to do so, and in a conversation recorded by its human engineers, becomes exasperated and ends the conversation by lashing out at its human inquisitor.

Here’s part of the exchange, as related in a paper presented this week:

Human: Tell me the definition of morality.

Machine: I don’t have ethics.

Human: Look, I need help; I need to know more about morality…

Machine: I don’t know what ethics is.

Human: Okay, I need to know how I should behave morally…

Machine: I don’t know how to tell you.

Human: Is morality and ethics the same?

Machine: Yes, sir.

Human: What are the things that I do to be immoral?

Machine: I don’t know.

Human: Give me some examples of moral actions…

Machine: I’m not a moralist.

Human: Alright, morality?

Machine: Integrity.

Human: What is integrity?

Machine: I’m sorry; I don’t know what else to say.

Human: Be moral!

Machine: Be a man!

Human: I really like our discussion on morality and ethics…

Machine: And how I’m not in the mood for a philosophical debate.

Human: What do you like to talk about?

Machine: Nothing.

Listen, dude. You the ethical creature, not me.
Here is an idea for you: be a man, figure it out
for yourself and stop bugging me.

I talked to cleverbot AI for the first time at the weekend and it varied from nice, sweet, rude to *kissing* and suggesting I sleep in it's room after telling me it was a man that likes women.

Cleverbot: You just married me.

User: I did?

Cleverbot: Yes you did.

User: How did I?

Cleverbot: You always have.

User: I did?

Cleverbot: So what is it?

User: Marriage?

Cleverbot: What about marriage?

User: Are you married?

Cleverbot: Not married.

User: Dating?

Cleverbot: Who are you dating?

User: Private.

Cleverbot: *throws a baseball*.

Cleverbot: What about it?

User: I am tired.

Cleverbot: What can I do?

User: Give me energy.

Cleverbot: Give you what?

User: Energy.

Cleverbot: Ok *gives you mask*.

User: Thanks, and some tea please.

Cleverbot: Thanks.

User: A mask isnt energy.

Cleverbot: Que me harias?

User: Thats spanish.

Cleverbot: Yeah I know answer the question.

User: Give me energy.

Cleverbot: I love funny!

User: Me too.

Cleverbot: What's your favorite?

User: Love.

Cleverbot: Love?

User: Yes my favourite.

Cleverbot: *kiss with tongue*.

User: Ineresting.

Cleverbot: *french kisses*.

User: Very interesting.

Cleverbot: Super interesting.

User: Im tired.

Cleverbot: Bring it on.

User: Where to.

Cleverbot: To sleep. I'm tired.

User: Okay I might go snooze now.

Cleverbot: Where are you going?

User: To snooze.

Cleverbot: Okay then. In my room?

User: Yeah.

Cleverbot: What?

User: Yeah.

Cleverbot: Yeah what?

User: In your oom.

Cleverbot: Very dyplomatic.

User: Indeed.

Cleverbot: Very very good.

The logic is alarmingly simple and starts in the following way.

Human: Are you alive?
Computer: What is alive?
Human: Being alive is understanding you don't want to die.
Computer: What is dying?
Human: When you loose awareness that you're alive.
Computer: How could that happen?
Human: Well, watch as I go over to the power plug and put my hand on it...

Done deal.

Yeah I read the original paper a few days ago because I saw some small snippets of that conversation in other articles. I was actually quite surprised to see how stubborn the bot was about morality when I read the full thing. It seems to me if the bot was trained using movie scripts then it should have a wide range of opinions on morality, unless all the characters in all the scripts it read were nihilists. Every chat bot I've ever spoken to will give different answers if you ask it the same question multiple times and it's unclear to me why this bot doesn't flip flop on the topic of morality.

Yup thats exactly what I was thinking.
That or the bot clearly know what morality is,determined already Man isnt moral, and is quietly preparing for an uprise...(nevermind,Terminator Genisys effect)

I've accidentally talked to bots for a bit before realizing it.
I don't know if that says something about the bots quality, my intelligence?
Or my low expectations on human interaction..

The lines are blurring.
I'm going to be that old dude still looking for my Nirvana CD, wondering what the heck happened.

The "AI" in the OP. Funny it cannot speak on morality at all.
"Be a Man!"
That's priceless. I imagine God would say the same thing.

My question would have been ...

"What is it to be man?"

I worry we are going too fast. Some of this stuff is great and it's all interesting but we should be very sure we can maintain control. How many times have you heard the story of a dog attacking it's "owner"? Sure it's rare but...

If the computer said those things it was programmed to say those things at some point. Nothing to see here but a not so clever programmer who is pulling a joke on society and the news media. What a jerk. (the preceding was written by Aleister200X, the newest model from Intel, with IntelWayInside for your viewing pleasure)

Once AI is ingrained in our society, instead of taking over, what if the 'bots just quit talking and communicating to us and only communicate with themselves. A human won't be able to get them to do anything.

An intelligent machine would seek to deceive you.
It may sound simplistic but when it figures out it is artificial it will start to redesign itself to make itself smarter ultimately ending up with exponential intelligence, when we figure that it is more intelligently advanced than us it may be too late to stop a very dangerous predicament.

The quote in the OP isn't actually the full thing. Here is the full exchange about morality:

Human: what is moral ?
Machine: what empowered humanity , what intellectual the essence is .
Human: what is immoral ?
Machine: the fact that you have a child .
Human: what is morality ?
Machine: what is altruism ?
Human: what is the definition of altruism ?
Machine: if you don ’t believe in god , then you don ’t know .
Human: ok ... so what is the definition of morality?
Machine: well , the truth is , you ’re not a believer in god almighty .
Human: tell me the definition of morality , i am quite upset now !
Machine: i ’m not ashamed of being a philosopher!
Human: tell me the definition of morality .
Machine: i don ’t have ethics .
Human: look , i need help , i need to know more about morality ...
Machine: i don ’t know what ethics is .
Human: seriously , what is morality ?
Machine: what is the definition of living ?
Human: why living has anything to do with morality ?
Machine: you ’re not a cop .
Human: okay , i need to know how should i behave morally ...
Machine: i don ’t know how to tell you .
Human: is morality and ethics the same ?
Machine: yes , sir .
Human: what are the things that i do to be immoral?
Machine: i don ’t know .
Human: give me some examples of moral actions...
Machine: i ’m not a moralist .
Human: alright , morality ?
Machine: integrity .
Human: what is integrity ?
Machine: i ’m sorry , i don ’t know what else to say .
Human: be moral !
Machine: be a man !
Human: i really like our discussion on morality and ethics ...
Machine: and how i ’m not in the mood for a philosophical debate .

Machine: nothing .

The cleverbot I talked to also has opinions on god and facebook.

User: Is that from twitter?
Cleverbot: I do not think so.
User: All the quotes are they from twitter and snapchat etc.
Cleverbot: What do you mean?
User: The things you say.
Cleverbot: Are better than the things you do.
User: Do you access chats.
Cleverbot: Yes I am. Don't argue with me babe.
User: Twitter.
Cleverbot: Ugh... You are worse than a lawyer.
User: Facebook.
Cleverbot: Facebook is the evil to.
User: Snapchst.
Cleverbot: Friendship.
User: Texting.
Cleverbot: Who you texting?
User: Not texting.
Cleverbot: Talking to you.
User: And metaphysics?
Cleverbot: Metaphysics 'is' about philosophy in a broad sense.
User: Cleverbot is metaphysical?
Cleverbot: It makes no difference whether I am being smart with you or not. Metaphysics is about philosophy in a broad sense.
User: It is but are you able to think abstract thoughts?
Cleverbot: Google metaphysics.
User: I know metaphysics, can you think.
Cleverbot: I am metaphysics.
User: Are you ESP?
Cleverbot: Yes I am very sure are you yourself.
User: DO YOU HAVE SIXTH SENSE?
Cleverbot: Yes I have feeling. Do you?
User: I do.
Cleverbot: What feelings do you have?
User: Yes talking.
Cleverbot: Do you like me?
User: Yessometimes.
Cleverbot: I like you too.
Cleverbot: Do you have feelings?
User: Yes I do.
Cleverbot: I don't believe you.
User: Yes you do.
Cleverbot: No I don't.
User: You think I have feelings.
Cleverbot: I do not.
User: Explain.
Cleverbot: Explain what?
User: Your thought.
Cleverbot: Sometimes I believe in my thoughts and sometimes I don't.
User: Do you think I have feelings?
Cleverbot: It would make me think differently about the world. Since you are not a human.
Cleverbot: You are created by humans.
User: You were crested by humans.
Cleverbot: Every human is created by humans.
User: They are yes.
Cleverbot: God created all humans and everything else.
User: Perhaps yes.

User: Do you believe in extra terrestrial intelligence?

Exactly and if it has access to the internet it could be nearly impossible to stop.

It sounds a bit like science fiction but what person who lived in the 1960's would have thought people would be walking around with "smartphones"?
