Stupidity is naively accepting everything the media pushes on us as "facts".
Those who never bother to look beyond the headlines deserve that adjective.

So, I always tell people that fighting is easy when I'm teaching it, but I've been doing it for my entire damn life.

In this way I am erroneously assuming that my students should be able to grasp what to me is a simple concept?

Interesting. I can see this happening on both ends of the scale in different areas of my life.

From this assessment I can assume that we are all stupid and genius at the same time.

Maybe we just suck at communicating and understanding as a general rule?

Me too - and I always resolve to stop.

What we suck at - and this is from my Dad who died decades ago and that I'm only just beginning to get - is Listening.

It's very hard to really listen when you aren't physically with someone - heck it's hard to 'shut the mind up' long enough to really listen and hear when present with someone.

I heard some one say (a line from an online tech dude to Lily Tomlin on "Grace & Frankie") and I paraphase a bit ".... just yelling into the void on the internet; if you want conversation to need to do it in person...". I won't go quite so far, I've had fine conversations over the interest but there is a lot of 'noise'.

We do suck at listening and on multiple levels.

One we suck at listening in its most literal form and we suck at hearing what's happening underneath what's actually being said.

You know, as an example.
When someone is freaking out and angry all the time and we simply just react with anger rather than actually setting aside our issue and looking deeper into that person to see what's really going on.

If you can't win the debate, call everyone stupid racists and walk away.

lolz

Funniest thread of the year! (And that includes the one on elevator farts!)

Exactly , thats the thing to do now..........

Marginalize anyone with a different opinion........

Try and move the masses into the direction that anyone who doesnt agree must be an idiot, racist, science denier, or biggot.....

Raise the victory flag.......and claim it in the name of tolerance, and diversity

If I was president or a special person, I'd say AGW is a serious issue and should be dealt with. Way I see it, when you're a powerful leader you can't roll the dice with AGW. Too many lives at risk. But as a person not in the loop, I have to say I'm more skeptical. Some 97% of climate scientists think AGW is a very real thing and I put a lot of weight to that. But I'm not a scientist, not without years of university work and field study. Sorry. I just cannot know with the confidence they do. Yet I like to think about it every so often and I can't help being skeptical about what I read.

Taking away guns is universally good? I haven't looked into it enough to know. I suspect there's more to it than that, but it's only a personal judgement. Cultures aren't equal. What works in one might not work in another. Sometimes what's logical common sense to us is NOT how it's "in the field." This happens too often for my liking. It has come a point where I'd be unsurprised if drinking (some) motor oil is good for our health.

As for the confederate flag, I think it's a hot potato. A lot of people respect the south not for the slavery but for other reasons. YOu shouldn't bottle them all up together. Yet the flag brings to the surface painful memories. It's a question I guess how mcuh we want to censor for the good of the nation.

I am an idiot so what have I got to prove. IQ is 90-something or less according to tests. College is limited.

Totally with the global warning, this planet is very pissed.. And as far as gun control, well thats a dead issue really, if it happens your going to see a whole new type of government. And you won't like it.

The old Rebel Flag, well as soon as we start screwing seriously with this issue it won't stop. The religious right will want to ban rainbow flags and rainbow stickers and it will never stop. I get it millions of Blacks want the flag eliminated. It's an election years and their voices will be heard.

So many bigger issues to be talking about other than a flag.... How about better schools, health care and taking care of the mentally ill wondering about with guns.

I 100% agree with the poll and the results. I still try, I'm not sure why.

Ditto but a lot less on gun control.

Hmmm...

I think the authors of this piece will find that indeed, it is very difficult to explain certain concepts to certain individuals. One of the things that always makes me laugh, is trying to explain why it will always be stupid to accuse any American president, or party, of attempting to instigate a socialist take over of the United States, when none of the people suggesting that any such thing is on the cards are well traveled enough to have ever experienced even a DAY in a socialist state.

Hell, these are the same people who think that the UK is a socialism, just because we have a health care system that revolves around the idea of access to healthcare being a right we all ought to be able to enjoy, rather than a privilege enjoyed by a monied few. Essentially, we are talking about people, who despite having no real idea what socialism actually IS, aside from a definition they heard on the Alex Jones show once, having no idea what life in other lands is really like, and having no clue as to how to go about figuring these things out for themselves, they deem it appropriate to open their mouths, and banish all hope of a reasonable discussion with the first three words out of their mouths.

But there is little point, after a time, in trying to discuss geopolitics with someone who literally does not have the wit to imagine the lives of others, in a complex enough fashion to make them capable of learning anything from the effort.

I think if the Confederate flag gets banned realistically this would set in motion banning of things like the soviet flag, anything related to che and off course the Nazi flag, and it may continue down the line banning old flags that represented any country with a bad reputation. The British did some messed up stuff to USA, ban it. Then the best will be when the native Americans trump everything and demand the USA flag be banned.
How can we be butthurt about Confederate flag for slaves while also not get butthurt at USA flag for native Americans genocide.

As I always say, "God must love stupid people, He made so many of them".

Common Sense ain't so common anymore.

You left out climate change and evolution, as well as several other issues.

Another line I like is this "In order to be an American Conservative, you have to be in full denial of things you see happening around you every single day, normally several times a day. If you don't deny these things, your friends, family, and Church will call you a charlatan, a socialist, and ostracize you. US Conservatives will vehemently deny things going on right in front of their eyes, all while proclaiming their absolute unquestioning faith for something that they've never seen nor had any indication that it exists".

POINT IN CASE.

No one is attempting to 'BAN' the conferate flag. The discussion is about whether or not it should be 'flown' above the South Carolina State House on a daily basis.

I don't think it's appropriate for the flay of a defeated 'entity' to be flying over the legislature of the current 'non-confederate' goverment of South Carolina.

In my opinion that symbolism is close to 'treasonous' along with being racist.

AGAIN, no one is talking about BANNING the flag.

Welcome to the thread of the year!

MINNEAPOLIS (The Borowitz Report)—Many Americans are tired of explaining things to idiots, particularly when the things in question are so painfully obvious, a new poll indicates.

According to the poll, conducted by the University of Minnesota’s Opinion Research Institute, while millions have been vexed for some time by their failure to explain incredibly basic information to dolts, that frustration has now reached a breaking point.

Totally agree!

Until....

Of the many obvious things that people are sick and tired of trying to get through the skulls of stupid people, the fact that climate change will cause catastrophic habitat destruction and devastating extinctions tops the list, with a majority saying that they will no longer bother trying to explain this to cretins.

Ahhhh, this person is the dolt they are talking about!

Coming in a close second, statistical proof that gun control has reduced gun deaths in countries around the world is something that a significant number of those polled have given up attempting to break down for morons.

Ohhhh.. again! Double stupid!

Finally, a majority said that trying to make idiots understand why a flag that symbolizes bigotry and hatred has no business flying over a state capitol only makes the person attempting to explain this want to put his or her fist through a wall.

Ok I can agree with 2 things! Everyone is dumb and the confederate flag should be burned!

But those are opinions and opinions vary and his gun control point is demonstrably false. Opinion piece disguised as "science" is obvious.

That stakes you out on some self-imagined highest possible ground where there all further debate is closed. When in reality you are the least informed, most illogical and bigoted in the vicinity. Militant level of ignorance and cover for your own intellectual void so very hard worked at to stay in such a realm of imagery only you can see.

Doesn't one need a little more info like how many degree changes are we talking about or are we to assume that any climate change will cause catastrophic habitat destruction and devastating extinctions. Anyway we all know the fix is to put all our hard earn cash into carbon credits and all is good....

I think the "N" word does also, so I suggest that we ban both and if either are ever used (by anyone) it is a 10 dollar fine that goes towards some good cause. We could pay off the national debt with the "N" word fine and maybe 100 feet of highway with the flag fine though...

I don't know. I've heard people who came from former Soviet Bloc countries and from Cuba talk about it, and they accuse the US government of heading in a bad direction.

CASE IN POINT

Amazon, eBay ban sales of Confederate flag merchandise

eBay on Tuesday called the Confederate flag "a contemporary symbol of divisiveness and racism." eBay/Screenshot by CNET Amazon and eBay -- two of the most prominent online retailers in the US -- said they decided Tuesday to ban sales of the Confederate flag and related merchandise on their sites.

The companies made the change as a quick response to a groundswell of public complaints that the companies were allowing sales of the controversial symbol. Their decisions follow similar bans from retailers Walmart and Sears on Monday. Online retailers Etsy and Newegg also said Tuesday they'd stop selling such merchandise, and Google said it would remove Confederate flag images from Google Shopping and its ads.
