I was in the Army during the cold war and was there when the Berlin wall fell. These are the facts, they have more tanks but we have the Apache. We have more fighters planes than Russia and China combines! The Russian military equipment is of poor quality and the soldiers are very poorly trained. We conquered Afghanistan in a couple of months, Russia got their ass kicked after 10 years! I was in a Nuclear missile battalion and unless Putin is crazy they will never be used. It will be another training mission if things get hairy.

People, don't believe the hype, Russia is no threat no us or NATO.

It will go very bad for Putin if he pushes the envelope.

You realize that Russia has the highest number of nuclear missiles in the world?

Which means very little if they are of poor quality and can't reach their target. Quality trumps quantity in almost every situation.

And quantity is its own quality.

Russia has outstanding missiles and always has. They've always been slightly ahead of everyone else in that field.

Status Quo is not very stable in Russia. Russian billionaires most likely don´t like Putin´s latest speech where he told them to bring funds back to Russia, funds which have left the country during sanctions and because oil price has dramatically dropped down. Putin warned billionaires also the fact that the capital transferred abroad may have a variety of sanctions and restrictions on the scope of the future.

I think he is pushing the envelope, he doesn´t care Nato envelope. I believe he is having Napoleon syndrome.

a reply to: Nikola014 Yup, it will take 1 to screw up everything. There are no winners in a nuclear war, unfortunately we don't have a say. In my opinion, there will be a military coup before that happens. There are enough nukes to blow up earth a few times. Have faith in the good guys.

a reply to: Metallicus That is why they have a ton of tanks and nukes, they have very low quality stuff. Their planes and cars are garbage.

a reply to: Zaphod58 Not really, its the same stuff from the cold war. Never updated, people are leaving Russia. The ones that are leaving are the wealthy and smart, who wants to live under a psycho dictator?

No offence, but that was 25+ years ago. I'll also pitch, if one nuke is fired in anger, alliances will click into place like the first world war and NATO\U.S won't be fighting just Russians.
Just like opportunist looters in a disaster, others will take what they can during worldwide conflagration.

This is simply not true.
It's not the same stuff from the cold war, people are not leaving Russia and as a matter of fact, all Ukrainian refugees are going to Russia.

Damn, two cold wars really deluded you on your viewing of Russia. Have you ever been there at all?

And quality has its own disadvantages, the Germans had better equipment. They Russians won their great patriotic war with Inferior tools. (And lend lease).

a reply to: Nikola014 Read the news, Putin is threatening Russian billionaires to bring back the money or he is going to freeze their accounts. Before you reply get your facts straight, or it just crappy Russian propaganda. In my opinion they have lost already, they didn't learn the first time.

True Russia's conventional forces are in a bad state. Corruption has taken a tettible toll on training and equipment. And morale and desertion are also big problems. Russia has a limited budget and prefers to spend money on sext toys and not so much on logictics and command and conrol. Russia's intervention in Georgia were very ugly for what should have been quick and easy victories. The same in Ukraine where you Russia's elite forces just barely beating out Ukraines mess of a military. Ukraines superior numbers and lack of local support for the Rebel/Russian forces have been its saving grace. Russia does remain a threat to Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia but, they would have to face NATO as well and they would not go well.

Russia has no global power projection and it has almost no allies left beyond a few failing states. Russia's economy was nothing to brag about and now is a complete disaster. The only things make Russia relavent are its Nukes and it position on the Security Council. Nukes do not have much roll in the world simply because use of them means that your nation and likely the planet ceases to exist. And while others want to see India, Germany, Brazi, Japan, South Africa added Russia does not want anyone esle ao it remains important. Not to mention all the likely members are heavily tied to the US.

As for the OP were a part of 59th Ord?

Russian itself isnt a big deal, but BRICS is. If we get involved any further in the Middle East and Russia picks a fight with us, we will have our hands tied. We cant afford to fight two wars if BRICS is destabilizing the Petrodollar. We may have superior equipment, but we can only go as far as the loans take us, and with out the Petrodollar, that wont be far.

Um, no it's not. They have two new ICBMs in the last ten years or so, as well as several new air to air missiles that are going to change things radically. As well as their SAM systems.

There was also evidence that they rebuilt at least some of their nuclear warheads.

Every country who has nuclear capability and a rogue leader who can push the button, is a very serious threat. The bloodiest wars in history are caused by psychopath and maniacs. Not by rational people.

It has been reported on CNN recently... that Russia has the most nukes of any country...and they now have nukes that are extremely hard to detect...and if they are launched our way...we may not not know about it in time. To me...this is something to be very concerned about.

Think about this, Iskander-M and S-300/S-400/S-500.

Russia can`t fight that far away from home, but at home it will be difficult to take out the Iskander-M when they shoot and move, and are being protected by formidable Anti Air Systems.

Iskander-M; Mach 6-7, several different ways of targeting, highly manoeuvrable on the approach, lots of counter measures including anti-jamming and they shoot and move...remember the Gulf War and Iraqi Scuds ?...only these are much more precise and can take out everything without them going to be shot down.

And when you want to take them out with jet fighters, the new S-300, S-400 and S-500 systems will be a pain the ass. Russian tanks are protected by these systems also, they always send them with their tanks, no very good for Appaches and A-10s.

Russian radars are also good and are able to detect stealth.

The T-90 tank is probably also very capable, and Russian jet fighters with their missiles will also be enough decent to cause some trouble.

Russia has been developing lots of new military tech and part of them are delivered now in numbers to the army, and they are doing lots of military drills. The common soldiers have also gotten excellent new standard gear.

In December 2014, Russia's Defense Ministry announced plans to conduct at least 4,000 military drills in 2015.

Tactical advantage: Russian military shows off impressive new gear

Elite Russian troops are displaying a new arsenal of body armor, individual weapons, armor-piercing ammunition and collar radios — a menu of essential gear that gives them a big tactical advantage against a lesser-equipped Ukrainian army.

Uses passive and active jamming system, hidden in the body of the rocket. When approaching the target from the rocket separated false targets and small jammers and so on. The missile uses stealth technology. Iskander-M also carries a complex of Electronic warfare jamming devices for the suppression of the enemy's radar.

Russian military is now in much better shape as in the first decade of the 21th century.

Everyone has radars that make stealth obsolete. And yet everyone is building stealth aircraft almost as fast as they can.
