You silly shill

It's kind of irritating when you see it. A discussion is going decidedly in one direction and the opposing side will sometimes resort to the old, "you're a shill" comment. It happens quite often, but there is a pattern. It's the poor debaters who toss that term around. So to put that in it's proper context, being called a shill is an admission of that posters superior debate skills.

A true shill would be a professional online presence. He/she would post for a living, and by nature of their continued existence have to be somewhat good at their job.

So when you are called a shill, know two things, first, you have already frightened the opposition with your ability, and two, since the act of name calling is usually the last resort, you have already won the debate.

I agree. When I see people use that slur, it is ALWAYS the poor debaters who do it. A real debater doesn't care who employs his opponent, he just addresses his points. If the points cannot be overcome, then they must concede; not get angry and call the person a shill.

"You're a shill!" = "I am out of my depth in both debate and information content and therefore will now endeavor to drag you down to my level, where I can beat you with experience."

Anyways, I've had the same accusations thrown at me. I believe we all have.
As others said, debate their points (if they have any) and carry on.

....not that big of a deal. Most certainly not worthy of two separate "rants".

It's true that often posters that do not care for reality much or the facts often resort to calling those bringing to the table that which they do not want to hear ''shills''.

As for any real shills, not sure if I have seen any on ATS, perhaps some of the global warming brigade and I avoid the US politics site, it's probably full of them.

Freemason threads seem to get binned pretty hastily but not before being overrun by hordes of shouters and ''it's a fabulous charity organisation'' (you really think so?) ''how dare you'' types.

They are here...but subtle.
For the most part, there is no real reason to pay "shills" to promote bs. They just let those out of touch with reality types do the work for them, FOR FREE.

I've said time and time again, they just allow those who believe reality is what they read at some "alternative media" site because it goes "against the grain" to spew their bs.

The real shills operate better than that and more often than not, are never actually seen by others as "shills".
Double speak, half truths, and a bit of actual truth in the mix.....it legitimizes them to most.

Exactly.

Now, don't get me wrong....real shills exist and are out there spreading bs, but not so much here.

There are others they seek to influence besides the membership of this place and like we both said, they let others do the "work" for them....muddy the waters, blah blah blah, yata yata...

The actual shills are MUCH harder to notice because they often come across as knowledgeable and will throw truths out (often wrapped in lies) to distort, rather than deny truths....

Anyways, I'm about to ramble....shutting up now.

I think it comes from the complete disbelief that somebody doesn't see it their way. You have to be getting paid by the "insert evil name here"
