As for why a new pipeline? Pipes can only carry so much. The current requests are for far more than the existing can carry. The solution is a new pipe or alternative shipping methods.

How does it work under NAFTA?
They demand a certain percentage of our oil and we have to deliver? I've tried to Google this and I haven't found anything that explains it clearly.
It seems that if no pipeline, we either send the oil by railway, which is inefficient, or we redo NAFTA?

Yes and no.

As part of NAFTA, Canada and the US (Mexico is exempt from these specific clauses) must sell their products to all North American clients equally. How the products get from point A to B is not specifically covered.

So, yes, Canada must offer the products to Americans, but no, we are not 'obligated' to sell to just them. We are, however, obligated to maintain a minimum percentage of energy exports...ironically, it does not actual specify that those exports must go to NAFTA partners.

well, I figure with the right amount of negotiations and a big cut of the revenue from the oil that will flow through the pipeline that the native americans will see the benefit of letting the pipeline be built on their land.

The government is smart enough to know that if they try to force this pipeline on indian lands that they will never be able to keep that part of the pipeline secure and free of leaks. the government would need to post 24 hour a day guards on every foot of the pipeline to prevent it from being shot full of holes or knocked down.

Since this IS A Conspericy site. If I was a 1% democrats, I would have tried to pay off any Indian tribe that let me. This way Obama doesn't have to veto the bill, or keep the lie up that, this bill will not creat any jobs. This pipeline is tons of good paying shovel ready jobs.

Someone on another post made the comment, 'what if a tornado hits the pipeline'?

It's a scary proposition, even a level 1 tornado walzing across the pipeline would let loose how many thousands of gallons of filthy bitumen?

Maybe everyone in every one of the states they're thinking of crossing should consider that. How about all the enemies of the thing, are they going to pay for guards placed every 10 feet the whole length of it?

Looks like the vote lost by 1 vote. Congrats to whoever had their wits about them.

We should be spending this money on alternative energy sources, not ruining what's left of Canada and the entire middle of the country just to have oil to ship to China.

There's a reportedly Snopes denied story out there that one of the upstate NY tribes awarded Obama an honorary title of 'Walking Eagle', for which he was thrilled.

It's supposed to mean 'a bird so full of xxxx it can't fly anymore... '

Keystone XL failed to pass the Senate by 1 vote:

www.abovetopsecret.com...

"Congress is not - nor should it be - in the business of legislating the approval or disapproval of a construction project," (Sen. Angus) King said in a statement. "And while I am frustrated that the President has refused to make a decision on the future of the pipeline, I don't believe that short-circuiting the process to circumvent his Administration is in the best interest of the American people."

www.nbcnews.com...

It shouldn't be in the business of legislation a corporate construction project. Period. Agreed with Sen. King on that one and it certainly shouldn't be attempting to bypass the established checks and balances for the same.

I think you underestimate the psychopaths that are in charge. So far no one in our treasonous government has gone to jail for Ruby Ridge, Waco, Fast and Furious, Wounded Knee, or any of the illegal wars in the last 13 years. They have proven that they can get away with murder on a regular basis.

I have participated in sweat lodges and vision quests of the Lakota Sioux for over 25 years (through Granpa Wallace Black Elk's leadership) and support the Sioux in their fight against Keystone. But I have no illusions as to what our corporate owned government will do to defame, slander, infiltrate (FBI) and ultimately create some false flag as a pretense to exterminate their opposition. There is a large element in our government that is totally rogue and will carry out their agenda without the slightest concern for the lives of Americans (native or not).

Well when the republicans soon gain the majority you can bet that this pipeline will be approved, and they will walk all over the rights of the Native Americans. How many times are we going to give the natives autonomy and land, and then take it away from them? They've been screwed over so many times by the federal government that it is ridiculous. If people want to complain about what the US did and is doing to the Iraqi people then they should really be up in arms over similar oppression occurring right here at home. But the government walking all over the rights of its citizenry is nothing new, and it will continue until the people band together to stop it. The government should have a much harder time today violating a Native treaty than they did in the 19th century, but watch them get away with it.

If they already have a massive pipeline cutting the US in half, why build another?

They want to extend it all the way down to the Houston TX refineries. Right now it ends in Oklahoma. I worked as a surveyor on a good portion of the proposed route. That route has alot of wetlands and canals and such that the pipeline would have to be bored under. Boring rigs are expensive to operate not to mention all the mats that you would need for all the heavy construction vehicles.

They kept waiting on Congressional approval to build it, but it never came so they laid us off after we had everything ready to go for construction.
