Solicitor General: Israel Has No Claim to Jerusalem, Just as Russia Has No Claim to Crimea

Lawyers for the Obama administration compared Israel’s control of Jerusalem to Russian claims over the Ukrainian territory of Crimea during oral arguments this week before the Supreme Court in a case concerning the rights of U.S. citizens to list Jerusalem as part of Israel on their passports.

U.S. Solicitor General Donald Verrilli, who is rumored to be in the running to replace outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder, drew the comparison on Monday while he attempted to convince the Supreme Court that Jerusalem is not officially part of Israel.

Wanted to share this with ATS. I thought it was interesting and just logical, probably because of conditioning, so many people associate Jerusalem with Israel, but the reality is that, Jerusalem is Palestine's Capital and Tel Aviv is Israel's Capital.

At the end of the day, that solicitor will come back crawling on his knees, and beg for mercy and for public to accept his apologies, and admit shaken and stirred Jerusalem is as Jewish as National Lawyer Association, Floridan doctors or WallStreet bankers.

You can't pick and choose. Either Jerusalem is administered by the UN (de jure), r it is administered by Israel (de facto).

Wrong it should be administered by the rightful owners and that is Palestine not Israel. The lawyer is right Jerusalem was taken by force which is against international law. Israel should pack their crap up and move back to their capital of Tel Aviv. How many times do the Israeli supporters have to be told this before it sinks in?

The big difference here is that the population of Crimea Voted to gain independence because most are actually ethnic Russians.

How about we give the Palestinians a Vote to get it all on an even playing field.

Its rightful owner is the Ottoman Empire. Should Jerusalem be given back to Turkey?

Why??? Because the U.N. said so??? Do you really think that if the Arab countries would have defeated Israel and took over their land, that the U.N. would have stepped in and demanded that the Arabs give back the Jewish land???

Your map is pretty skewed...ALL that green land was given to Israel by Britain who had control of the land at the time...

The Ottoman Empire is long gone Palestine still exists. Just because some people controlled it in the past doesn't give them the right to take it by force. But seeing how you are an Israeli supporter I know this is falling on deaf ears.

The people of Crimea voted to rejoin Russia. The people of Jerusalem didn't vote to rejoin Israel.

Sorry but the whole nation of Palestine was not given to Israel. This is a map of the land that was given to Israel and the Palestinians.

Every inch of land beyond that is stolen land that should be returned to the Palestinians.

So it's ok When Britain gave the land to Israel when they had no right doing so but you don't support what the UN says? The Arabs never tried to take Israels land they were trying to keep Israel from stealing Palestine.
