If you guys can check out "Battle for Terra" and "Titan AE". "Battle for Terra" seems a little childish but its not a dumb story. I would say its well worth owning a copy of. Very cool. "Titan AE" was OK, nothing incredible but worth a watch at least once.

That's funny, I almost suggested Titan A.E. but didn't since it's geared towards younger audiences. Indeed it's nothing incredible, but I definitely enjoyed it as a kid when it came out. Maybe because the planet at the end shares my name.

I am surprised nobody has mentioned Akira yet.

Kaneda is a bike gang leader whose close friend Tetsuo gets involved in a government secret project known as Akira. On his way to save Tetsuo, Kaneda runs into a group of anti-government activists, greedy politicians, irresponsible scientists and a powerful military leader. The confrontation sparks off Tetsuo's supernatural power leading to bloody death, a coup attempt and the final battle in Tokyo Olympiad where Akira's secrets were buried 30 years ago.

IMO anime or foreign films are usually better with subtitles as opposed to dubs.
Bad dubbing can ruin an otherwise awesome piece of art. Personal preference.

Akira was the first anime I ever saw (that and speed racer). It had me like a zombie.

It hasnt really been equaled IMO. Different titles, different themes, different styles....yet none like Akira. There are so many good titles out there that I dont want to say its the best or another is worse than Akira. It is just in a class of its own.

I agree with you on the whole subtitles VS dubs. Things get butchered in translation. Simple things like titles can be COMPLETELY different. A pivotal conversation can be made into just a filler moment. Ect.

I like the original voices to things, even if its mostly just screaming while powering up..LOL

EDIT TO ADD:
Check out Space Battleship Yamato. The anime series or live action movie are worth watching with subtitles. Prime example of what you are talking about. It sucks in English.
That is what a live action anime movie SHOULD look and feel like BTW. If you havent seen the live action movie please do.

HOW COOL IS THIS?

Jump to 1:30 -1:36 or so for a good feel of what the movie has to offer.

I didnt hear about that!

Oh my damn, that looks sick. It looks like they wont try to reinvent the wheel with it too. If its loyal to the source material then cool. It will be one of the best movies ever made from what we can see already. The story was perfect and they are smart to work WITH IT. I hate when idiots try to make things their own and change everything that fans liked.

The Japanese are better film makers than their Hollywood counterparts. IMO the future nexus of cinema will be Japan.
Sick...

Yeah, fan made films are where it's at, a lot of times. Especially if produced by the hardcore loyal ones because you know they won't try to embellish it for a box office somewhere. If you're a Tolkien fan check out "Hunt for Gollum".

I think Japan has always pumped out cool and unique movies (for the most part anyway). You really can't go wrong with Akira Kurowsawa, or Toshiro Mifune IMO. It's definitely the foreign films from Asia I look to often. I also just love the sound of the languages.

The Guyver.....

I am downloading the biobooster series now. I never got around to watching it. I have the movies from the 90s. They are creatures of their time. I still think they are cool. The premise of the story is just insanely good.

I cant wait to watch the series. It looks like a freaking masterpiece. It just looks like an Anime Magnum opus right there.

Thank you very much for the heads up.

Yes sir. Fan made work is really cool. I follow the star trek stuff. I am still hoping that star trek renegades gets picked up or they at least finish the pilot /movie.

If you like star wars check out "Threads of Destiny". Its ok. I really didnt like it, but I am also not a HUGE star wars fan. I like SW sure, but I think its better read than watched. You miss SOOOO much if not. Its still a cool little star wars movie. The actors are blah. Thats my issue with it. A good set of actors could have made up for the production short falls and there were a few. Check it out.

Well,

This is one of my favorites. I've read about 25 volumes of the manga published by Dark Horse, I've got the original 25 episode anime series and I've seen the new feature-length anime films...

Berserk.

Someone blindsided me with the original TV series years ago and I have been hooked ever since. It's not for everyone, but, I dunno, give it a try.

It's dark fantasy, not sci-fi.

Love Trek. Hard to choose a favorite as they all have their pros and cons, and style. Though I actually hated "Enterprise" I think it was. The series that was suppose to be like a prequel to classic Trek. The fan stuff that I've seen is great but honestly I should check for more. As I kid I was a huge Star Wars fan! I even enjoyed Phantom Menace. Idc what anyone says, pod racing is the shiznit! Wasn't a big fan of Abrams Trek but I think his style will work better with Star Wars so we'll see.

My productivity level went way down since you started this thread.

Yeah,
Enterprise was really crappy. They should have done a pre-TNG /post TMP, with Sulu as captain between the years he started aboard the excelsior up to when the Enterprise C was destroyed. He deserved his own show. EDIT TO ADD: They COULD do the show with him now, and it would be a RESOUNDING success. Make his character openly gay and make him fight with Klingons allot in the pre TNG time frame. Money.

I still watched Enterprise since its trek after all, but honestly it was a let down. I HATE the intro song. What happened to the orchestral entrance of the ship in deep space?..... a nebula here and there and bam the title comes up, the ship warps and we are on our way. But no, we have to hear what a drunk sad farmer might want to listen to as a love song with clips of rocket launches to force the point that "this is what started it all, ooh".

Yes, my productivity is way down now. This thread has become evil.

Well, I have a series that I wanted to read by Dianna Wynne Jone. She has been writing for a while. She does fantasy and is a celebrated childrens book writer.

The Dalemark series-
1 Cart and Cwidder
2 Drowned Ammet
3 the Spellcoats
4 the Crown of Dalemark

Dianna´s 1986 story, "Howl's Moving Castle" was one of her stories that was produced and made as an anime film in 2004. It was a really good movie. Its available Subbed or Dubbed. If you like anime check that out. OR read the story first then see the film.

EDIT TO ADD:
Another great example of a good live action anime film is "Natural City". This is a must see. Its dark, well made, twisted and great. Own it if you can. Watch it at least once.

"Eve of Destruction"........ was ok. It had great character development. It also dragged on at the end a little. I think they just over shot and tried to get it all into the story. Its a cool movie though.

"Cargo" ........I just saw this again last night. Its one of the greats. Worth owning a copy of and is absolutely a must see.

BBC America just finished The Intruders. Conspiracy organizations and a sci-fi theme that hasn't been done justice in a long while. I just finished the first season myself. The Intruders is totally worth a watch.
